Chris Coons in 2020 DE Senatorial race

On Crime: Domestic terrorism should be a federal crime

Q: Domestic terrorism is not technically a federal crime. Should this be a federal crime?

COONS: Yes, and I am encouraged that already a hundred individuals have been arrested and charged with both state and federal offenses. Look, we narrowly avoided what could have been an even more tragic night. This wasn't just a disruptive riot. This was an attempted coup, the most significant in the history of our republic.

On Foreign Policy: We need NATO more engaged in the Middle East

What made the Iran deal possible was getting most of the world aligned with the United States in putting sanctions pressure on Iran. That's what got them to the table. Now, we're in a place where, although President Trump, and I appreciate his saying this, is saying, here's a moment for diplomacy. We need NATO more engaged in the Middle East. We need our partners in Europe. Lots of other actions and steps he's taken have weakened and strained those alliances and those partnerships.

On Foreign Policy: Led bipartisan opposition to China's election interference

A bipartisan group of 12 senators has written a letter to senior Trump administration officials, urging them to craft a "comprehensive strategy" to counter covert Chinese interference in democracies around the world. Led by Cortez Masto, the lawmakers outlined the growing threat that Chinese Communist Party activities pose to independent democratic institutions.

Democratic heavyweight Elizabeth Warren is a signatory to the letter, as is Chris Coons (D-DE) and Republican centrist Cory Gardner. The letter's wide spectrum of support suggests that, unlike the investigation into Russian meddling, future attempts to uncover Chinese actions in the United States may have a bipartisan character.

On Principles & Values: There can only be reconciliation with repentance

Many of my Republican colleagues are now calling for healing and for us to come together. I'll tell you that there can only be reconciliation with repentance. I think the single most important thing that Republicans in Congress who helped facilitate this widespread conspiracy theory that somehow the election was stolen can do in these remaining ten days is to stop those lies and to persuade their followers that President-elect Biden is the duly elected President.

On Principles & Values: We have to address the trust deficit in our country

We are at the beginning of the end of this pandemic, with nearly 300,000 Americans dead. That's a lot of empty chairs at tables at holiday time, and there's 16 million Americans infected, 850,000 filed for unemployment this past week for the first time. We have to address the trust deficit in our country. Trust in science and vaccines. Trust in each other after this election. The Senate can lead and show that we can deliver the kind of relief that will restore hope to the American people.

On War & Peace: Not consulting Congress on war weakens us in the world

A democracy, when we go to war, is stronger when the Constitution is followed and the people's representatives authorize that conflict. I think that strengthens our resolve as a nation and I think that strengthens our hand in the world. To ignore Congress, to not even consult with us, let alone seek authorization, I think weakens us on the world stage.
