2020 House elections: on Budget & Economy

Barry Moore: Government should spend carefully & reduce national debt

One item on his list - reduce the national debt. "The way it's set up right now, if the agency or department doesn't use that money by the end of the fiscal year, they lose it. That'd be like you having children saying, 'Hey, we'll give you an allowance this week. But if you don't spend it, you don't get any allowance next week.'" Moore says "We're going to give you what you need to run your government but save where you can because this deficit we're spending, somebody's got to pay for that."

Blake Moore: Rely on state and local stakeholders for recovery parameters

I support the CARES Act and the Payment Protection Program, but I do not feel we took a strategic approach to the way we applied it. By employing smarter policies, we could have created a tailored approach to support those that needed it most. I want to point out that programs of this size cannot be effectively run at the federal level. We need to rely more on state and local stakeholders to properly implement them.

David Valadao: Balancing the budget , cutting debt will help the economy

Today's government spends, borrows, and taxes its people too much. Our national debt has surpassed $23 trillion, over $65,000 for every man, woman, and child in America. David strongly opposes wasteful projects, such as the construction of a high-speed rail system throughout California which will cost tax payers billions of dollars with little added benefit. Responsible spending reductions to tackle our national debt will strengthen the economy.

Gary Palmer: Downsize government rather than using Alabama gas Trust Fund

Palmer started his career in the private sector before cofounding the Alabama policy Institute (API) in 1989. As president of the think tank with ties to the right-leaning American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), Palmer Has been engaged for years in state-level policy issues, including tax and regulatory affairs.

In 2012, API Joined a coalition that successfully campaigned against the public referendum on and measure to transfer money from the Alabama Legislative Exchange Council--which collects royalties from offshore gas expiration--into The state's cash-strapped General Fund, which covers many social services. Palmer and other conservatives argued that a "no" vote on the transfer would force the state government to downsize and allocate its spending more efficiently. Palmer also recommended a proposal to congressional Republicans that any debt-ceiling deal should contain language allowing oil and gas exploitation on federal lands as a way to pay down the national debt.

Greg Murphy: Curtail spending; $22T debt mortgages our children's futures

Our national debt recently passed $22 trillion and despite this staggering number, our government continues to borrow over 40% of every dollar it spends. I support a Balance Budget Amendment and will always look for and support spending cuts, with an eye toward clearing defining wants from needs. We must curtail this out of control spending that is mortgaging our children's futures.

Lance Harris: Less government is better; cut taxes and waste

Washington D.C. is a mess," he said. "Just like I've done in the Louisiana Legislature, I'll work with President Trump to continue to cut taxes, rein in waste and get government off the backs of our farmers and job creators. Despite what (Democratic presidential candidates) Bernie (Sanders) and (Joe) Biden say, America needs to be less like Cuba and more like Caldwell Parish.

Lisa McClain: Supports the line item veto

I believe that we should review all spending and start by ensuring the budget is balanced going forward, and debt repayment is included. Many items that are "luxuries" like funding pet or special interest projects must stop now. We should also stop add-ons to bills that have nothing to do with the bill's purpose (example is if it is a COVID relief bill package there should not be funding included for Planned Parenthood). I also believe that the line item veto should be enacted.

Paul Broun: Dems and GOP overspend, will lead to U.S. financial collapse

[On federal budget]: "Spending has been spiraling out of control, and Republicans are just as guilty as Democrats. There's only a dime's worth of difference between the two parties. Spending on such an unprecedented scale will cause hyperinflation and eventually the financial collapse of America." Recommends an AR-15 weapon for property, family defense

Pete Stauber: Block grants to invest in small cities and towns

Small communities throughout the state have struggled to invest in key public services. Craig has introduced the Small Cities and Towns Investment Act. If enacted, Craig's plan would create an annual $10 billion block grant program for communities with fewer than 30,000 residents. Distributed through county governments, the new grant program could be used by small communities for a wide variety of initiatives, such as health care, public transportation, childcare and community centers.

Renee Unterman: Wants balanced budget Constitutional amendment

Renee is proud to have helped guide Georgia's economy to being named No.1 seven years in a row. Our state is thriving because we have cut burdensome income taxes at both the state and federal level, all while balancing the state budget. In Congress, Renee will sponsor a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution to reign in the deficit, support the FAIR tax, and eliminate red tape and regulations to empower small business owners in our community.

Young Kim: Links good jobs to lower taxes & less regulations

Young believes that the hard working men and women of Southern California are taxed and regulated enough. She will fight to keep taxes low so that individuals and families can keep more of their hard earned dollars because they know how best to spend their money, not Washington politicians.

Yvette Herrell: For balanced budget amendment & line item veto

I support a balanced budget amendment & providing the President with line-item veto power. I will not vote for compromise spending bills that do not address the deficit & our national debt. I will not vote to raise the debt ceiling, unless done so temporarily with accompanying reductions in spending to ensure future fiscal survival. I am not afraid of government shutdowns that curtail "non essential" employees & operations. I will vote to eliminate or reduce all unconstitutional spending.
