2020 House elections: on Crime

Bob Good: Make it a hate crime to assault a police officer

Good has spent this week traveling around the district holding rallies in support of law enforcement, replicating the law-and-order message Trump is using following unrest in cities across the country amid protests over police brutality. Good said he would support making it a hate crime to assault a police officer and increasing funding for police while saying Webb would take funding away from police.

Greg Stanton: Systemic criminal justice problems put Black lives at risk

Greg Stanton, D-Ariz., on Twitter said Tuesday's verdict symbolized justice for George Floyd's family, but "does not erase the systemic problems that put Black lives at risk every day in America."

Greg Pence: Strongly against defunding the police

The recent calls to defund or disband the police departments we depend on are irresponsible. I will never support that. Some are advocating to change qualified immunity. Qualified immunity does not prohibit bad officers from being held accountable by our system of justice. Those who commit illegal acts on the beat, like those accused of George Floyd's murder, are rightfully subject to state or federal criminal charges.

Ilhan Omar: The slogan "Defund the Police" is a policy demand

Members of the progressive "Squad" pushed back against Obama's criticism of the "defund the police" slogan. In an interview Obama criticized the phrase as a "snappy slogan" that led Democrats to alienate centrist voters. Ilhan Omar defended the phrase, saying in a tweet, "We lose people in the hands of police. It's not a slogan but a policy demand."

"And centering the demand for equitable investments and budgets for communities across the country gets us progress and safety," she added.

Michelle Fischbach: Keep Rikers Island open and do not ease bail requirements

Nicole opposed Mayor de Blasio's plan to close Rikers Island as well as fought the establishment of supervised injection centers for addicts in our community. She supports our law enforcement and has been calling for changes to the state's new bail law that doesn't consider criminal history or if an individual is a threat to public safety, and includes serious crimes like homicide, strangulation, assault and drug dealing.

Nikema Williams: Need holistic justice with focus on opportunity, forgiveness

As a mother to my son Carter, I want him to have the best chance to live a fulfilling life. I want to know that he is safe while jogging, or sleeping in his car--and will not be robbed by hands of white supremacy. Our criminal justice system must not be used as a tool of oppression. For too long--our society has focused solely on punishment and not on rehabilitation. We need a holistic justice system that allows those in it to improve their own lives and learn from their mistakes.

Nina Turner: Supports criminal justice reform and policing standards

Turner says, "The criminal justice system is inherently unjust to Black and Brown people. We need to reimagine how we do policing and while we are at it, let's fix the entire system from the judiciary to the streets." Implement alternatives to incarceration where appropriate. End mandatory minimum sentencing and the death penalty. Create national policing and use of force standards. Ensure law enforcement accountability. End for-profit prisons and immigration detention centers.

Ruben Gallego: Recall Sheriff Joe Arpaio for racial profiling

Gallego appealed to Latino voters, noting his opposition to the Arizona law requiring police officers in some circumstances to determine the immigration status of arrested or detained persons. Gallego also founded "Citizens for Professional Law Enforcement," which sought to recall Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The controversial sheriff has been criticized for alleged racial profiling and for investigating Obama's birth certificate.

Troy Carter: Current criminal justice system is a failure

Our current criminal justice system has failed us. We are not any safer--now is the time to reform the system. Our children and families are counting on us for real change.

Dean Phillips: George Floyd Act: change the culture of law enforcement

Phillips voted to pass H.R. 7120, The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, including:
  1. Make Policing Safer: Ban chokeholds and no-knock warrants, two practices that have been directly responsible for the tragic deaths of American citizens. In addition, the legislation would require that police officers use deadly force only as a last resort.
  2. Change the Culture of Law Enforcement: Prohibit racial and religious profiling, fund new training programs, and create a national accreditation system for police departments.
  3. Improve Transparency: Create a nationwide police misconduct registry to prevent problematic officers from quietly moving from one jurisdiction to another.
  4. Improve Accountability: Hold police officers accountable for misconduct by ending "qualified immunity" for law enforcement.
  5. Encourages Innovation: Grants for communities who wish to develop innovative approaches to public safety.
