2020 House elections: on Environment

Blake Moore: When setting environmental policy, prioritize state rights

Utah and other western states are at huge disadvantage with lopsided land ownership being controlled by the federal government. As your Congressman, tourism, recreation, energy diversity, agricultural opportunity, and conservation will always remain a driving force for decision making. I believe public lands will benefit greatly from the current conversation of states' rights and local decision-making.

Chris Pappas: Called on EPA to maintain & strengthen Clean Water Act

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has repealed, diluted or otherwise weakened many crucial parts of the Clean Water Act -- often at the behest of big polluters and in opposition to science and the public interest. Congress has the authority to block these attacks on America's clean water. Reps. Debbie Dingell and Chris Pappas filed a resolution calling on the EPA to maintain and strengthen the Clean Water Act and end ongoing Trump administration efforts to undermine it.

John Yarmuth: Federal government must ensure access to healthy environment

The federal government has a responsibility to ensure access to a healthy environment. I am committed to working to find solutions that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions so that future generations will have a more sustainable and healthier environment. I will also continue to support legislative efforts that invest in new science and technology innovation, safeguard the quality of the air we breathe and the water we drink, and strengthen environmental protections.

Madison Cawthorn: Top down federal agricultural regulations do not work

Q: Would you support efforts to standardize requirements for factory farm animal waste management for all animal agricultural sectors in North Carolina?

A: At this time I would not. Each different section of that industry has different needs and requirements, a top down, big government, Washington style approach would likely result in less efficiency and a decrease in overall waste management.

Michelle Fischbach: Farmers are best conservationists

A concern Fischbach said she's hearing is overregulation. Examples range from regulations on how contractors can classify employees to farmers' frustrations with Minnesota's buffer law. The buffer law might be a state law, but it's still considered an overreach by many Minnesotans. Farmers want to be able to run their farms. They are the best conservationists. Their money is in their land and they won't abuse it, she said. Fischbach plans to bring concerns about overregulation to Washington.

Mike Quigley: I've been a member of the Sierra Club since I was 16

One of the most damaging legacies of the Trump administration will be its shameful sacrifice of clean air, clean water, and productive land to corporate polluters. My first job was at EPA and I've been a card-carrying member of the Sierra Club since I was 16, which is why I believe that responsible environmental stewardship is among our most sacred responsibilities. I support strong enforcement of the Clean Air Act, NEPA, and other bedrock environmental protections, enhancing where necessary.

Pete Stauber: Supports EPA agreement on St. Louis River contamination

Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, and Stauber, announced the Environmental Protection Agency signed a $4.5 million agreement to remediate contaminated sediment in the St. Louis River Area of Concern on Lake Superior. "Lake Superior is also a vital component of our tourism and shipping industries," Stauber stated. "By investing in the health and vitality of the St. Louis River, we are preserving this national treasure for future generations to enjoy."

Troy Carter: Supports Green New Deal but not parts that would hurt LA

Both candidates said they supported Biden's decision to stop issuing new oil and gas leases in the Gulf of Mexico while the administration considers whether royalty rates should be adjusted to reflect climate change. Carter said the nation should "wean itself off fossil fuels" but stressed the industry's importance to Louisiana. "I support the framework of the Green New Deal. But the Green New Deal in totality has issues that would devastate Louisiana."
