2020 House elections: on Homeland Security

Barry Moore: Committed to securing benefits for military families

As Chairman of Military and Veteran Affairs, Barry authored and sponsored key legislation to include bringing the "RedTails" F-35 Fighter Squadron to Montgomery. His sponsored legislation made strides to protect military families from unfair child custody courts, secure residency for in-state tuition programs for military families and veterans, protect the licensing of working spouses through licensure reciprocity, and advocate for our Purple Heart Recipients.

Bradley Byrne: Push for Littoral Combat Ships, built in Mobile

In the House, Byrne committee assignments were consistent with his local and personal interests: Armed Services, Natural Resources, and Education and the Workforce.

Following an intensive push by Mobile business interests, Byrne praised outgoing defense secretary Chuck Hagel's decision to resume procurement of an updated version of the Navy's Littoral Combat Ships, relatively small vessels that are built at the Austal Shipyard in Mobile.

Dan Bishop: Strong national defense is Constitutional & moral mandate

We owe and immeasurable debt to our active duty military who stand in harms way to protect our freedoms, and all the veterans who have honorably served our nation. That means keeping the promises we make to them when they sign up to serve.

In the State Senate, Dan voted to create job opportunities for our veterans, exempt military retirement from the state income tax, and fund programs to help veterans in crisis.

There's always more that can be done for those who put themselves in harms way to protect our freedom. And Dan will do even more in Congress. Maintaining a strong national defense is a Constitutional mandate that must be upheld and, I believe, a moral obligation that must be met by Congress. Our elected leaders must follow the counsel of military leaders and make sure they have the resources and tools they need to protect our shining city on a hill and uphold the freedom and liberty that has made the United States the great hope of mankind.

Greg Murphy: Keep promises to our veterans

Promises made should be promises kept. That standard goes for our active duty military who stand in harms way to protect our freedoms, as well as our veterans who have honorably served our nation. Our area contributes as much as any in the nation to our armed forces and we must make sure our services, for both active duty, veterans and their families are second to none.

Greg Murphy: Maintain Constitutionally-mandated strong national defense

The United States is the world's great superpower and maintaining a strong national defense is a Constitutional mandate that must be upheld. We must follow the council of our military leaders and make sure they have the tools they need to protect our freedoms around the world.

Jason Crow: Earth observing satellites key to combat climate change

Q: What missions would you have NASA prioritize?

A: I support the establishment of a space weather interagency working group to increase communication and knowledge transfer between government participants, the academic community, and the commercial space sector. Earth observation must be one of our highest priorities. Without earth-observing satellites we cannot obtain the necessary data on climate change and other earth system processes to prepare, mitigate, and respond to challenges.

Lauren Underwood: Protect rural & suburban areas from domestic terrorism

Underwood introduced legislation that she said aims to help protect communities from domestic terrorist threats. "Rural and suburban communities are increasingly targets of terrorist acts, but too often don't have access to the federal funding and resources they need to protect themselves," Underwood said in the release. "If our schools aren't secure, students and teachers can't perform to their full capability. If our places of worship aren't safe, we can't practice our faith free from fear."

Mike Garcia: Now is not the time to scale back the military

[On Defense budget]: "As a former Naval Aviator in combat operations, I've seen what sequestration and the Budget Control Act did to readiness and modernization programs." He highlighted the many national security issues America currently faces including the border crisis, and rising threats in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia."Now is not the time to scale back our investments in our military."

Peter Meijer: Helped pass veteran education legislation

I have spent three years between Iraq (as a soldier) and Afghanistan (as an aid worker), served in numerous disaster response efforts at home and abroad, and steered one of the nation's largest veteran non-profits as Chairman of Student Veterans of America (SVA). With SVA, I helped pass landmark veteran education legislation like the Post-9/11 GI Bill and learned firsthand the importance of building coalitions and involving key stakeholders when seeking to make historic change.
