Melanie Stansbury in 2020 House elections
On Abortion:
No government interference in women's health care decisions
Q: Do you support or oppose repealing a long-dormant 1969 state law that outlaws abortion, except in limited circumstances?A: I believe family decisions of this nature are deeply personal and should remain between a woman,
her family, and her faith and that the government should not interfere in personal health care decisions of a woman and her family.

On Civil Rights:
End healthcare, housing, employment discrimination
I will fight to protect reproductive health care, ensure equal pay for equal work, address the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous women, and support initiatives that uplift women and girls. I will fight to protect LGBTQIA+ rights, reverse
the discriminatory policies of the previous administration, and end discrimination in employment, healthcare, housing, and all spheres. I will fight to ensure our laws are inclusive of all people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

On Drugs:
Voted to decriminalize cannabis and supports legalization
In 2019, I voted for legislation to decriminalize cannabis, an important step to reform the cannabis policies that have disproportionately impacted low-income people of color.
I support expunging the records of non-violent drug offenders. I also support responsible recreational cannabis legislation that would regulate cannabis like alcohol and help to stimulate New Mexico's economy.

On Education:
Investments in public education help communities thrive
I believe that education and child-wellbeing are the cornerstones of a thriving community. As a graduate of Albuquerque Public Schools (K-12), I know first-hand the impact teachers and mentors can have on a person's life. In Congress,
I will make education and child-wellbeing a top priority. I will continue to push for more educational opportunities for kids, increase pay for teachers, and for investments in education and community supports.

On Energy & Oil:
Develop more renewable energy, decrease emissions
Addressing climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our time. I have worked on climate and water issues for years and believe
New Mexico is poised to rise to the challenge by developing more renewable energy, working with industry to address emissions, and building a more resilient future.

On Health Care:
Supports Medicare for All: health care is a human right
Health care is a human right. In Congress, I will work to fix America's broken health care system. That means supporting
Medicare for All and working to make sure that everyone, regardless of pre-existing conditions, has access to quality health care, addressing fundamental inequalities in access to care, and expanding health care access across the state.

On Immigration:
Path to citizenship is part of a humane immigration policy
We must take a compassionate approach to fixing our immigration system and reversing the discriminatory practices put in place by the last administration. Families must be reunited and we must provide a path to citizenship. In Congress,
I will support humane immigration policies that address root causes of migration and provide opportunities for immigration, which boost our economy and add to the rich cultural and economic fabric of our country.

On Tax Reform:
Lower taxes for families, local business to grow economy
New Mexico needs major tax reform. The state needs to lower taxes for families and local businesses, eliminate taxes on social security, and level the playing field so our local economy can grow.
I strongly support GRT reform and creating a more business-friendly environment for New Mexico's local businesses.
