2020 House elections: on Social Security

Barry Moore: Allow workers tax free options with private accounts

Q: How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?

A: Stop borrowing from the account and allow workers to participate in tax free options with private accounts. Government cannot be trusted with our money for future needs. Social Security will struggle for years to become fully funded and solvent; at this point it will require some tough choices.

Q: What government spending would you reduce?

A: Across the board unfunded liabilities and social programs.

Byron Donalds: Raise the retirement age for those under 50

Q: How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?

A: The only way is to have meaningful entitlement reforms. For people under the age of 50 years old, we are going to have to raise the retirement age in order to sustain Social Security benefits.

Jake LaTurner: Slowly increase retirement age; means testing for wealthy

First of all, we should make no changes to those at or near retirement age. Those are benefits that have been earned and should not be messed with. However, the program is going broke and for future generations we need to look at small changes to ensure that Social Security can continue to exist for them. Those should include slowly increasing the retirement age by two years (2 months per year over a period of 12 years) and instituting means testing for extremely high income individuals.

Lisa McClain: Give younger generation investment options

Q: How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?

A: Unfortunately, I believe there is no guarantee on how this would be done. However, I think some ideas to make progress toward that goal include not taking money out of the Social Security Trust Fund for any other purposes, and giving the younger generation flexibility within Social Security investment options like HSAs. Lisa McClain: Look at all options to ensure for younger generation

Social Security is of vital importance to many Americans. And let me say it again: Social Security is of vital importance to many Americans. We must ensure that we are not taking money out of the Social Security trust fund for other purposes. People have paid into this for their entire lives, and they deserve to get their money back. We must look into all options to ensure Social Security remains available for the younger generation.

Marjorie Taylor Greene: I would phase out entitlement programs

I would stop funding sanctuary cities. I would stop immediately funding any and all abortion providers. I would stop funding outdated government programs. I would limit funding government programs or services that are insolvent. I would limit foreign aid. I would phase out entitlement programs.

Matt Rosendale: Modifications may be necessary moving forward

Q: How would you guarantee Social Security benefits for future generations?

A: First and foremost, those approaching retirement age or are already receiving benefits should have no change in their benefit plan. We must recognize that people are living longer and less people are entering the job market which means modifications may be necessary in order to sustain the Social Security system moving forward.

Michelle Fischbach: Don't cut current benefits, reform must be bipartisan

Q: Your Social Security policy?

Fischbach: Current Social Security benefits cannot be cut. There's no way to pull the rug out from under seniors who depend on that income. When the Social Security & Medicare Board of Trustees released its forecast in 2019, they estimated that the trust fund will be unable to pay for full benefits by 2035. Any reform should be bipartisan, encourage work, continue to protect vulnerable populations and be grandfathered in over time so younger generations can adapt.

Michelle Fischbach: Strengthen Social Security and Medicare

Nicole's priority will be strengthening Medicare and Social Security to ensure seniors receive the full benefits of these programs. In addition, Nicole is committed to fighting price gouging and other predatory practices that increase the cost of prescription medications and she will ensure that New York receives its fair share of federal funding for hospitals, senior housing and other senior services.

Sean Casten: People with special needs losing Social Security

One of the most recurring issues he said he's heard over the course of 25 town halls is how people with special needs lose their Social Security if they earn even slightly above the poverty level wage. "That's the second or third time I've heard that in the last month or so," Casten said. "That gets your spidey sense tingling a little bit to go back and see what might be going on on that front."

Teresa Leger Fernandez: Protect Social Security and Medicare

We must protect Social Security and Medicare. Our seniors worked hard and contributed to these programs over their careers, and New Mexicans deserve to retire with dignity.

Yvette Herrell: Raise retirement age, means testing, slow growth of benefits

Unfortunately, our current Social Security system is unsustainable and must be reformed. We need bi-partisan statesmen to work together to determine the right metrics to raise the full retirement age for those not currently retired or nearing retirement, means test the benefits for those with higher incomes, slow the annual percentage of growth in benefits, and continue to increase the income level that pays into the system; all in an effort to ensure the future viability of the program.
