Teresa Leger Fernandez in 2020 House elections

On Abortion: Women have the right to choose

Planned Parenthood and community health centers must be supported and fully funded so that contraception is available and affordable, and breast and cervical cancer screenings are routinely provided. I fully support reproductive freedom. The decisions that we make about our bodies, our families, and our futures are deeply personal -- and those decisions must be protected, respected, and free from government interference.

On Civil Rights: Celebrate multiculturalism, speak out against discrimination

Here in New Mexico -- we celebrate our multiculturalism. In Congress, I will be a voice for compassion, understanding, and unity. I will continue to be outspoken against racism, sexism, homophobia, antisemitism, and xenophobia. We must always stand up for all of our communities, and against those who are complicit in fostering hate, division, and discrimination. We must defeat those that would demonize the "other" to achieve power.

On Civil Rights: Advocates equal pay for equal work

It is unacceptable that women make less than their male counterparts doing comparable work. In New Mexico women make 85 cents for every dollar paid to men. Hispanic women make even less, taking in 56 cents for every dollar paid to white men. I am an advocate for equal pay for equal work.

On Education: Invest in teachers, at-risk and Indian students

Teachers have taken on the enormous task of teaching hybrid, remote, and in-person in the middle of a pandemic. They teach without sufficient resources and often worry about their safety. It is our job to support them. In New Mexico, I expect the state Department of Education to prioritize spending on those most at risk students. We also desperately need the $850 million included in the bill for schools funded by the Bureau of Indian Education and the $10 million for Native American languages.

On Energy & Oil: Climate change is a crisis, invest in renewables

Here in New Mexico, we know how important the land is to who we are as a people. And we know that climate change is an existential crisis. We must reduce carbon pollution, rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement, and invest in renewable energy resources like wind and solar, as well as clean energy tax incentives. My family owns ranch land in el norte, and we recognize the value of regenerative agriculture.

On Gun Control: Supports national, comprehensive gun control

It is long past time for gun safety measures to be enacted at the national level.Every day, we are sacrificing 100 lives to gun violence--and hundreds more are injured. This is a national epidemic that occurs every day across the country -- because Republicans and the corporate gun lobby have blocked progress. Americans overwhelmingly support gun safety, and I support background checks on all gun sales, a red flag law, closing the boyfriend loophole, and reinstating the assault weapons ban.

On Health Care: Healthcare for all means access for all

Health care for all means access for all. It means a health care system that isn't crippled by bankrupting deductibles and copays, allowing drug prices to be negotiable, and ensuring that Americans cannot be discriminated against because of pre-existing conditions. We need adequate funding for clinics in rural areas. Health care also means access to behavioral and mental health services.

On Immigration: Path to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants

I will champion humane, comprehensive immigration reform that treats everyone with dignity, provides a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, and keeps families together. I strongly support comprehensive immigration reform that would provide a path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. and the DREAM Act, which must also extend to dreamers' families.

On Jobs: Yes to $15 minimum wage, no public college tuition for most

I fully support raising the federal minimum wage -- everyone who wants to work should be able to have a fulfilling job that pays a good wage. We must invest in education and job-training programs, so that students are job-ready out of high school, expand vocational training opportunities, and eliminate tuition at public colleges and universities for most students, so that our workers are not left with crippling debt years after they complete their schooling.

On Principles & Values: Need an economy that is equitable for all

We have an obligation to promote economic growth and stability, and address unjust income inequality. As a member of the U.S. House Committee on Education and Labor, I will work to protect families, students, and workers from stagnant wages. This committee touches so much of what we need in New Mexico and across our country: a $15 minimum wage, student debt reform, early childhood education, workforce development, strong worker and labor protections, and health care for all.

On Social Security: Protect Social Security and Medicare

We must protect Social Security and Medicare. Our seniors worked hard and contributed to these programs over their careers, and New Mexicans deserve to retire with dignity.

On Tax Reform: Help small, local businesses with tax incentives

As a former small business owner, I will work to support small businesses, and the backbone of our local economies, by cutting red tape that gets in the way, creating access to capital, and providing tax incentives for local businesses instead of giving handouts to large out-of-state corporations.

On Technology: Need strong investments in schools, internet, health care

I have worked in communities here in Northern New Mexico that do not have access to the internet, or even to clean water. These communities have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic because of their lack of basic infrastructure. We must build broadband and incentivize clean energy. We must expand our understanding of infrastructure to include critical services like health care, early childhood education, and public schools.

On Welfare & Poverty: Help kids in poverty with food assistance and Head Start

One out of every three children in my state lives in poverty. This bill allocates a much needed $39 billion to childcare providers; prioritizes assistance to families who otherwise cannot afford tuition; and provides $1 billion to Head Start to make sure we care for young children in a safe and nurturing environment. New Mexico has one of the highest child food insecurity rates, and we must help the hungriest families put food on the table.
