Paulette Jordan in 2020 ID Senate race

On Budget & Economy: Invest in infrastructure while interest rates are low

Being fiscally conservative means cutting unnecessary spending and making the right investments at the right time to make things cost less for taxpayers. While interest rates are low, we need to invest in our infrastructure before it's too late and our roads and bridges collapse. It means working hard to balance the budget and finding ways to pay for priority projects with existing resources, not having to borrow the money down the road, which would make taxpayers foot a much higher bill.

On Civil Rights: Formed Idaho Voice, non-partisan voter rights group

She said her priority is "always people over party."

"I think conservatives and Democrats can align on this," Jordan said. "Neither (group) wants to promote corporations over people. It's not about being a Republican or Democrat. It's about being a good Idaho citizen." Following the 2018 election, Jordan has focused on issues and concerns raised during the gubernatorial campaign. She formed Idaho Voice, a nonpartisan organization that supports grassroots civic engagement efforts and voter rights.

On Energy & Oil: Respect our land, combat corporate greed on climate change

I am a nationally recognized leader on environmental protection issues and will continue to lead the way in balanced policymaking for our future generations. I've worked hard for years, both in government and in the private sector, to protect our public lands, work toward proper management of our forests, and protect our national resources and wildlife in Idaho. We need leaders who respect our land and who are willing to combat corporate greed in order to address climate change.

On Energy & Oil: Cap and trade, carbon fees on table for climate change

On energy: "Legislation to mitigate climate change can be crafted," Jordan said. "Tribal governments have been leaders in best practices on this issue, policies like cap-and-trade plans or carbon fees are some solutions that have been proposed, and this crisis requires legislative and executive branches working in tandem to address this very real issue."

On Free Trade: Farmers want trade, not government bailouts

Our own Senator Risch holds a top position on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where he had the power to prevent these gouges to Idaho farming, but instead swept things under the rug and made farming dependent on USDA bailouts, which haven't even begun to cover the losses our farmers suffered from U.S. trade wars with countries like Mexico and China. It's time to wake up and realize that Idaho farmers are suffering, and without better foreign policy, they stand to lose everything.

On Health Care: Healthcare should be patient-centered, not profit-centered

We need a healthcare system which puts data on the center stage of the effort. We need to incentivize practices, procedures and medications that work. This is how we make healthcare a patient centered activity instead of a profit or revenue centered activity. The notion that Americans want to choose their healthcare plans for themselves is wrong. They just want the best healthcare and they hope they won't go bankrupt in the process.

On Immigration: Address immigration, border security, enforcement separately

This is a complex issue which requires a multi-faceted solution and a compassionate, people-first approach. First, the system is backlogged and overburdened in such a way that the response to its inefficiency is illegal immigration. We cannot continue down that path. Providing more opportunities immigrants to work legally in the U.S. will ease tensions at the border. We need legislation to address the issues of legal immigration, border security, and enforcement separately, as they are complex.

On Principles & Values: Will stay awake and work on country's business

We all watched as Senator Jim Risch, embarrassed our state by falling asleep on the job during one of our nation's most historic events [President Trump's impeachment trial]. If Idahoans fell asleep at work, we would lose our jobs. This isn't nap time. It's time to get to work. I will work to re-engineer our government to prioritize fiscal conservatism, American prosperity and to ensure everyone has clean water to drink, adequate healthcare, and world-class, affordable education.

On Principles & Values: We need a complete shift to people-first policymaking

When I talk about people-first policymaking, what I mean is that we need a complete shift to creating policy for the people. Our focus should not be on budget proposals that explode the federal deficit. We need to focus on people first. We need policy which focuses on the reasons our government was created: to create a society where we have safe roads, infrastructure, transportation, commerce, industry, energy and protection of our natural resources.

On Principles & Values: Youngest person elected to the Coeur d'Alene Tribal Council

A proud member of the Coeur d'Alene Tribe, Paulette was raised to fight for her community and to protect the earth's priceless natural resources. Growing up on a north Idaho farm and learning from her elders about land cultivation and preservation, she developed a strong connection to Idaho's land and people. In 2008, after graduating from the University of Washington, Paulette returned home to Idaho and became the youngest person elected to the Coeur d'Alene Tribal Council.

On Tax Reform: Trump tax cut only benefitted rich, increased deficit

It's hypocritical that our current leaders in Washington D.C. promote being fiscally conservative, but then sleep on the job while our national debt explodes. They voted for tax cuts that only benefit the rich and make things more expensive for the rest of us. Risch voted for the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and claimed it would somehow "reduce the debt and the deficit." He was wrong. The proof is everywhere: the national debt, federal deficit and government spending have continued to skyrocket.

On Technology: Strengthen cybersecurity to prevent election interference

One of the areas in which our country is most vulnerable to attack is in the area of cybersecurity. I would propose legislation to strengthen our cybersecurity in many areas, including preventing election interference. In addition to being under investigation for receiving illegal foreign campaign contributions, our current Sen. Risch has actually prevented significant progress on securing elections in other areas. The DASKAA legislation would have helped greatly, but Risch personally killed it.
