Bill Cassidy in 2020 LA Senatorial race

On Health Care: Coronavirus racial disparity not result of systemic racism

Governor John Bel Edwards shared that African Americans, who only make up 32% of Louisiana's population, have accounted for 70% of the state's [coronavirus] deaths. Yet when asked on NPR whether this is a result of systemic racism, Senator Bill Cassidy immediately rejected the idea as "rhetoric" and refused to acknowledge a need to address any underlying causes.

[Senate opponent Antoine Pierce writes]: Contrary to Cassidy's assertion, the healthcare disparity is not just a distraction. It must be addressed as part of the solution to the current pandemic. Senator Cassidy could also recognize this for the wake up call that it is and get to work addressing the structural racism in our healthcare system, our schools, our criminal justice system, our environment and our economy that is at the root of these health disparities.

The spread and deaths from COVID-19 are preventable and reveal ugly truths about racial disparities in our state.

On Tax Reform: Co-sponsored tax simplification for Gold Star families

Simplification of a special tax intended to stop wealthy parents from sheltering income by shifting it to their children inadvertently caused higher taxes on military survivor benefits. This removes the unintended tax treatment of survivor benefits. "This bipartisan legislation helps those who lost a husband or wife, a father or mother, serving in the military to protect us. This legislation fixes an unintended problem and lessens the taxes of the surviving spouse," said Dr. Cassidy.

On Abortion: Religion plays vital role; this includes protecting unborn

Faith and religion have played a vital role in our nation's history. Our Founders' vision was for America to be a place where individuals could practice their religion and express their beliefs freely and openly. It is important that this right is recognized and respected. This includes protecting the unborn. I am proud to have an "A" from the National Right to Life Committee.

On Civil Rights: Feds should not get involved in state action on religion

Cassidy says the Religious Freedom Acts are just in place to help people protect their First Amendment right of freedom of religion. And the federal government should not involve themselves in state decisions. Government should not bully. There needs to be some tolerance for all or there will be some tension there.

On Civil Rights: Laws preventing religious discrimination are "intimidation"

We know that religious freedom is at stake here. As the Hobby Lobby case demonstrated, religious freedom and our First Amendment rights are being increasingly attacked. We should oppose using the long arm of the stale to intimidate people of faith. I will continue to oppose laws such as ENDA that can be used as an excuse to use legal intimidation to attempt to limit freedom of faith and freedom of speech. All Americans, no matter what our political persuasion, should oppose such laws.

On Budget & Economy: Stop out-of-control spending & end earmarks

Bill believes Washington needs to stop out-of-control spending and lower taxes for small businesses and families. He's been an outspoken advocate against earmarks and believes that we must reform our spending programs if we hope to leave sustainable safety nets for our future generations.

On Environment: Top priority is coastal restoration

As Louisiana and the United State's economy is dependent on the health of our coast: coastal restoration is one of Bill's top priorities. He's also been a leader in reforming the national flood insurance program to ensure that flood insurance rates are priced fairly.

On Gun Control: Our 2nd Amendment freedom is in danger

Dr. Cassidy is proud to have an A+ rating from the National Rifle Association. As the Sportsman's Paradise, Bill will fight to ensure that Louisiana will not surrender its right to practice these traditions, nor will it surrender the right of its citizens to defend themselves. Under the agenda of President Obama and his liberal allies in Congress, our 2nd Amendment freedom is in danger.

On Budget & Economy: Stimulus bill includes extraneous items

Cassidy says he would vote for an $800 billion stimulus package if its spending measures were "timely, targeted and temporary." Cassidy argues the $820 billion bill that passed the House without a Republican vote is "two bills tied into one." It includes a job-creation bill with tax cuts and infrastructure projects that would work, along with needed increases in Medicaid, and a spending bill that is unrelated to stimulating the faltering economy.

On Budget & Economy: Stimulus package opposed; will hurt economy

Cassidy says that he voted against the stimulus package that was chosen, but instead voted for a stimulus that gave $80 billion to construction projects. This number was cut to $29 billion in the package that was passed. Cassidy points out that the unbiased Congressional Budget Office has said that the stimulus package that passed will likely hurt our economy in ten years, because it borrows so much money, leaving no money to expand our economy.

On Corporations: Opposed Obama stimulus; supported Bush's bank bailout

He said the 2009 approximately $800 billion economic stimulus package backed by Obama was overloaded with spending that would not improve the economy and he compared it to a doctor treating a heart condition by severing the patient's leg. Cassidy supported the final version of the 2008 $700 billion bailout for the financial industry, passed during President George W. Bush's administration. He supported the bailout because it contained some tax relief for hurricane victims.
