On Government Reform: Agrees her office should undergo independent audit

Galloway was in agreement with Senate Majority Leader Caleb Rowden: an independent audit of Galloway's office should be put underway as soon as possible. Biannual audits of the auditor's office are required by state law. Rowden said the most recent audit was in 2017, and because one did not happen last year--he said the House did not pass the legislation he had filed to do that--"this should have already happened."

On Crime: Need answers on probation, parole reward program

Many Ozarks sheriffs say the new rules are too soft on crime, and believe it rewards offenders for behavior they say isn't deserving of rewards, specifically to people on Probation or parole. "These are basic questions to answer that need to be answered from a governmental entity on how they're handling this program that's giving away incentives to offenders on parole," said Galloway. "Law enforcement, sheriffs, and crime victims have valid questions that need to be answered."

On Abortion: Trusts women to make their own healthcare decisions

On abortion, Galloway has a well-documented dislike of HB 126, the new ban on abortion after eight weeks of pregnancy with no exceptions. Yet what does Galloway think abortion policy should be? Are any restrictions acceptable to her? Her campaign responds that "she trusts women to make their own healthcare decisions in consultation with their family, doctor, and faith," a phrase she's used several times before.

On Budget & Economy: As auditor uncovered $350 million in waste

As Missouri's State Auditor, I've been the taxpayers independent watchdog. I have uncovered $350 million in wasted or stolen taxpayer money--and my audits led to 40 criminal counts against corrupt public officials. Just imagine if all of that money went to making health care more affordable or public schools stronger.

On Government Reform: Government should be totally transparent

We need to completely open up the system and make it totally transparent -- so you know exactly what's happening with your tax dollars. That's the only way we'll be able to take steps to make healthcare more affordable. To make sure every child in this state, no matter what zip code they live in or how wealthy their family is, gets a great education. To help workers get the skills they need to compete for jobs in this changing economy. To have a government that respects your hard-earned money.

Laura Kelly and a top Republican lawmaker that would expand government health coverage in the neighboring state. Galloway says she would follow suit if voters elect her over Republican Gov. Mike Parson in November.

On Corporations: End Missouri's Big Business Bonus: no bonus for early taxes

Missourians deserve a level playing field when it comes to the taxes they pay. They're rightly upset by the thought that the system is being rigged in someone else's favor.

Individual taxpayers know that if you're late paying your taxes, you'll pay penalties and interest. There's no bonus for meeting the deadline.

Which brings us to what I'd like to call "Missouri's Big Business Bonus." Businesses in Missouri--including the state's largest retailers--pocketed about $124 million in fiscal year 2018 and $120 million in fiscal year 2017--just for turning in the sales taxes they owe on time. Not early, mind you, but by the legal deadline. Those are sales and use taxes that you as a customer paid, but the business got to keep, merely because they paid their taxes on time. Missouri is one of 28 states that offer this break to retailers, but our state's discount for timely payments is the second-most generous in the nation.

On Gun Control: Favors background checks & red flag laws

Galloway told reporters she favors gun safety measures that have bipartisan support at the national level like universal background checks and closure of gun-purchase loopholes. She also endorsed "red flag" laws, which allow courts to temporarily remove firearms from their owners if they express interest in harming themselves or others. "There are things that can be done to make our communities safer and we should not shy away from that," Galloway said.

On Abortion: Upset about Missouri's pro-life abortion position

Missouri Auditor Nicole Galloway hints she is upset enough about the state's position on abortion rights she may run for governor next year. [Governor Mike Parson on Abortion is Solidly pro-life].

Galloway recently defended her incumbency in a statewide election and has not hitherto been seen as a prospective chief executive.

On Welfare & Poverty: Audit and investigate SNAP transactions that raise red flags

SNAP transactions that raised red flags, but were not seriously investigated," Galloway said.

Missouri doled out more than $2.4 billion between 2015 and 2016 to hundreds of thousands of recipients. On average, a Missouri household received about $260 a month, according to the report. The audit flagged more than $16 million spent only out-of-state for 90 days or more. Benefit money can legally be spent outside Missouri, and there are many legitimate reasons to do.

On Gun Control: Current governor problem in enacting gun laws

"St. Louis, Springfield, and Kansas City are all in the top 12 most dangerous cities in the nation. In Virginia Beach, when there was a shooting, and 12 people lost their lives, the governor and legislature went back into session and immediately debated common-sense gun safety laws," says Galloway. "Twelve kids have died in St. Louis and (the governor) says it's not his problem and he needs to stay in his lane. If helping families is not in his lane, then he needs to get out of the way."
