Michael Coachman in 2020 ND Governor's race

On Abortion: Individuals, including unborn, have intrinsic right to life

The rights of American citizens proceed from The Creator, not from government. Government authority proceeds only from the consent of the People. Individuals, including the unborn, have the intrinsic right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

On Civil Rights: Nurture strong marriages of one man and one woman

On Education: Don't restrict children in prayer, religious expression

Parents have the right to rear and educate their children according to high standards of character and quality, with minimal government interference. Parents are ultimately responsible for their family's education and should be able to choose among traditional, charter, home school, online, private, or other alternative schools. School children should not be restricted in their rights to voluntary prayer, religious expression, and acknowledgement of God and the United States Constitution.

On Government Reform: Size of government & regulations should be limited

Federal, state and local governments should be transparent and limited to their respective roles, in accordance with the Tenth Amendment. The size of government, government regulations, and entitlement and transfer programs, should be limited to essential, inherently governmental functions.

On Principles & Values: People should be responsible for their own behavior

Individuals and families are responsible for their behavior. Public policy should encourage and empower their efforts to provide for their own health, safety, education, moral fortitude and personal wealth.

On Tax Reform: Taxes for government, not forced redistribution of wealth

Individuals, families and the government should be responsible in their spending. Taxpayers expect the government to be efficient and avoid waste with their money. The State should only collect taxes to fund legitimate government functions. Government taxes and fees should be limited to essential, inherently governmental functions and not for the forced redistribution of wealth, or disproportionate advantages for targeted interest groups.

On Principles & Values: Volunteers at prison ministry and Christian school

Michael Coachman, who in 2018 received 13% of the vote as an independent candidate for secretary of state, said Monday he will run for governor in 2020 as a Republican. Coachman was previously an unsuccessful lieutenant governor candidate in 2012 and 2016. He is a retired U.S. Air Force veteran who lives in Larimore. He's a teacher helper at a Christian school and volunteers at a prison ministry.

"I believe what I'm standing on is what people of North Dakota is looking for, someone who is going to stand on the Constitution from beginning to end," said Coachman, who expressed confidence in winning the Republican endorsement.

[Primary opponent Doug] Burgum is a wealthy former software executive who lost the Republican endorsement but won the nomination in his 2016 primary challenge against Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem, the endorsed candidate.

On Families & Children: Committed to God, his family, the Constitution, integrity

The things that stick out the most when hearing from Coachman are his vocal commitment to God, his family, the Constitution, and integrity. He believes in working collaboratively with people and he feels that too often candidates fail their constituents, after being elected to office, by not following through with the promises they've made. Indeed, Coachman believes we need more statesman and less politicians.

On Government Reform: Work with tribal leaders to resolve concerns over voter ID

Perhaps the most prominent issue at the moment in regards to this race is the controversy surrounding voter ID, with the Supreme Court's recent ruling in favor of North Dakota's law. Coachman says that it's important to ensure that only legal North Dakota residents vote in our elections, but that tribal relations must be improved. He would work with tribal leaders to resolve concerns about voter suppression.

On Government Reform: Make acquiring absentee ballots easier

Coachman said he jumped into the Secretary of State race to promote transparency and visibility of the office. The retired Air Force veteran from Larimore said he tries "to help the underdog." He was previously a lieutenant governor candidate in 2012 and 2016.

"I'm doing it because I like to serve the people; I believe in the Constitution," Coachman said. "When I raised my hand, I swore to defend this nation." He also sees technology as an issue: "Our system should just be totally independent, where no one should have access to it except North Dakota." He also expressed concerns for the secretary of state's website, such as repetitive data entry and acquiring absentee ballots. "It is not the easiest," Coachman said.

Coachman indicated he would visit cities and counties to meet with residents, even do radio broadcasts for outreach. Not everyone communicates the same way, he said.
