2020 NM Senatorial race: on Gun Control

Mark Ronchetti: Gun owner and a strong supporter of the Second Amendment

Mark is a gun owner and a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. Hunting, sport shooting, and gun collecting have all long been part of the New Mexico way of life and culture. And, for so many, gun ownership is a key way to protect themselves and their property from harm. As Senator, Mark will always fight to protect our constitutional right to bear arms.

Mark Ronchetti: Opposes a ban of semi-automatic rifles

Q: Do you favor a federal ban on the sale of military style semi-automatic rifles?

A: I completely support the Second Amendment and oppose such a ban. A law-abiding citizen who responsibly handles their guns doesn't need the government to come knocking on their door. I support stronger penalties for criminals who commit crimes with guns in this state.

Gavin Clarkson: Self-defense is a God-given fundamental human right

When the federal government wanted to subdue Indian tribes, the first thing they did was confiscate their guns. I oppose "automatic weapons" bans, "red-flag" laws, and a national gun registry. Self-defense is a God-given fundamental human right. "Shall not be infringed" means exactly that. Due process is another fundamental right.

Mark Ronchetti: Supports 2nd amendment and background checks

I support the second amendment and oppose bans and gun confiscation. I support background checks for gun purchases and enhancing penalties for criminals who commit crimes with guns. However, law-abiding citizens who responsibly handle their firearms don't need the government to come knocking on their door.

Maggie Toulouse Oliver: Refused to certify proposed petition on new gun control law

Toulouse Oliver also said her campaign will not take money from oil companies, executives or affiliated political action committees. She ruled out taking money from the pharmaceutical industry, too, or from the National Rifle Association or tobacco companies. Ben Ray Lujan has said he will not take money from the NRA, either, or from private prison companies or major oil companies.

Having spent her political career in posts that are relatively administrative, not legislative, Toulouse Oliver has little record on hot-button issues such as health care or gun control. In turn, she is free to define herself for voters. But she already has riled plenty of Republicans with her push to regulate political spending by nonprofit groups and her refusal to certify a proposed petition for a referendum on a new gun control law.

Gavin Clarkson: No ban on assault weapons; defend 2nd amendment

Q: Do you favor a federal ban on the sale of assault-style weapons?

A: No. "Assault-style" is a nebulous term. Leftists seem to think it's any gun that looks scary. Americans have every right to own weapons to defend themselves, their families, and their property.

Q: Would you favor a repeal of the 2nd amendment?

A: No. The 2nd Amendment doesn't grant us the right to defend our persons, properties, and families. God did that by making us in His image. 2nd Amendment simply protects what Justice Scalia called a "pre-political right," which is deeply ingrained in natural law. Self-defense is an inalienable right of human nature.
