Wanda Vazquez Garced: Urges Senate to provide aid following earthquakes

Garced sent a letter to Senate Leadership urging swift passage of the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations for Disaster Relief Act, H.R. 5687. This bill would allocate critical disaster relief funding for Puerto Rico as a result of ongoing earthquakes that have affected the island. Wanda Vazquez Garced: Limit government borrowing; restrict use of such funds

Governor Vazquez Garced sent a bill to the Legislature seeking to establish certain limits on the government's debt issuance and restrict the use of that money. The measure provides that the government may only borrow to invest in capital improvements. The proposed "Debt Issuance Liability Law" will also establish that the government will be able to refinance its current debt only if it achieves savings in the payment of interest.

Ricky Rossello: Restructure $70 billion in debt after 13-year recession

Rossello is leaving his position as Puerto Rico's governor at a time when the island is trying to restructure part of $70 billion in debt and cope with a 13-year recession that has led to an exodus of nearly half a million people to the U.S. mainland in the past decade. In an attempt to cope with the recession, pensions have been cut and schools have been closed -- but the measures have led to more resentment from Puerto Ricans.
