Jo Jorgensen: Will veto any deficit spending, debt ceiling increase

As President, I will use my Constitutional authority to block any new borrowing. I will veto any spending bill that would lead to a deficit, and veto any debt ceiling increase. I will give every Cabinet secretary a specific spending reduction target to meet and hold them accountable. There is simply no excuse for sticking our children and grandchildren with the bill for these bipartisan bloated budgets.

Mark Sanford: Nearing point of no return on government spending & debt

I invested the better part of my professional life in trying to limit the size and scope of government--and the bi-product of much of its growth in the form of debt and deficits. It's been a bee in my bonnet for a long time. Though I have been out of office for six months my beliefs on the importance of these issues have not dissipated, and every one of us can do what we can do to affect in some small way the world around us. I haven't stopped thinking about the ways in which our present spending course will prove catastrophic for our way of life and our country.

Specifically, I think we are nearing a point of no return on government spending, debt and accumulating deficits. Historically these are the things that have rotted civilizations from within. And what I find frightening is that seemingly no one in Washington is talking about this problem--and how this issue mathematically is now at our doorstep. This is not just a problem for our kids and grand-kids. This is our problem.

Joe Sestak: Championed fiscally accountable "pay-as-you-go" legislation

In Congress, Joe championed fiscally accountable "pay-as-you-go" legislation to help ensure its passage. He advanced educational legislation, from pre-K through retraining; seniors' quality of life - including authoring and passing the first Elder Abuse Victims legislation in 17 years--and veterans' educational and healthcare expansion.

He sponsored small business legislation for access to start-up capital, tax and regulatory relief, and workforce development, including initiating and passing legislation for a 35% increase in funding for Women's Business Centers.

Howie Hawkins: Socialize big banks; manage the national currency

The national currency is a vital common resource that should be managed in the public interest. We must nationalize the Federal Reserve System as a Monetary Authority in the Treasury Department. The Monetary Authority will create all national currency (cash and electronic) free of any associated debt. New money will be credited to the account of the federal government as additional revenue to be spent into circulation in the economy in accordance with the federal budget. Banks will be prohibited from creating new money as loans. Banks will borrow or raise money for lending from savers and investors, including the Monetary Authority. People and businesses will borrow from funds in the banks' accounts.

Socialize the big banks: The allocation of investments according to an economic plan requires a significant sector of public banks.

Howard Schultz: $22 trillion debt is immoral and reckless

For too long now, our government has been spending more than it takes in. This year, that figure--unbelievable--will be almost one trillion dollars. Yes, one trillion dollars. Our national debt--all of the money our federal government has spent, beyond its means--is $22 trillion. It's immoral, it's reckless, and both parties are complicit. That's larger than the size of the entire U.S. economy.

This is a moral abdication--because the burden of that debt is going to fall on the shoulders of your generation. We already spend more on interest on the debt--this is an amazing number, $500 billion of interest expense every year--than we do on all federal programs to help the children of our country. It's insane. It's reckless. It's wrong. It's a lack of leadership. It's a lack of responsibility. And once again, it's emblematic of how broken the system is and both parties are complicit. That figure is only going to increase in the years to come unless somebody decides to fix it.
