Survey of 2020 Presidential campaign websites: on Government Reform

Rocky De La Fuente: Overregulation needs to cease immediately

Overregulation needs to cease immediately. Frivolous government regulation tends to stifle growth and redirect capital from jobs to compliance. This is not to attack those regulations that are properly designed to provide for the health, safety, and general welfare of the public; rather, it is directed at regulations that are relics from the past that serve no useful purpose in the present. Freeing up the related capital that is spent on compliance will kick start employment growth.

Mike Bloomberg: Phase out paperless voting machines

Mike will work with Congress to mandate that all paperless voting machines are phased out and replaced with systems that leave a verified paper trail. He'll require states to conduct statistically significant audits after every election and to publish the results publicly. And he'll increase oversight of voting-system vendors to make sure that all Americans can have confidence their votes will be counted when they cast their ballots.

Mike Bloomberg: Ensure equal status for Puerto Ricans; supports statehood

Mike will support statehood for Puerto Rico, subject to approval by Puerto Rican voters. He will ensure that all Puerto Ricans receive the same benefits and rights as other American citizens. Mike's economic plan will provide fair safety net funding to Puerto Rico, including full funding for Medicaid, the Earned Income Tax Credit, and the Child Tax Credit, as well as full Social Security benefits.

Tom Steyer: It's up to us to un-rig the voting system

The Right to an Equal Vote: A true democracy depends on the broadest participation possible. But as things stand now, all Americans do not have an equal vote. The struggle to make sure everyone is allowed an actual voice in our democracy is ongoing, and it's up to us to un-rig the system that continues to favor wealthy corporate donors.

Deliberate voter suppression by Republicans, gerrymandering, and corporate money flooding our politics have made it impossible for us to obtain equality in our government. Many people have to travel for hours to get to their polling location. Many more are faced with hours of wait time just to get inside. People worry they'll be penalized at their job for taking time to go to cast their ballot. This isn't fair or democratic, and now we have a president who is doing everything he can to exacerbate this inequality.

Voting must be easy and accessible, for every American. Without that, we are left governed by a democracy of dollars, not voters.

Joe Sestak: Stop corporate abuses of lobbying power

In Congress, I got a first-hand view of the impact of lobbying. The end result is that all too often our laws and policies are directed by corporate power & finances, ensuring corporate interests have priority over the interests of the American people, as well as people around the world. Our government is supposed to be "of, by, and for" the people, so as President I will do everything I can to stop corporate abuses of power and have our government once again be accountable only to the people.

Howie Hawkins: Voter suppression policies need to be reversed

We do not have real political democracy, let alone economic democracy. To have a democratic society, we need to restructure government and elections. Voter suppression policies need to be reversed, starting with restoring the pre-clearance provisions of the Civil Rights Act. We would put in place automatic voter registration, same-day registration, extended voting days, Election Day as a National Holiday, and other reforms, including mandatory voting (vote or pay a moderate fine) as practiced in Australia, Belgium, and much of Latin America, with a None of the Above option that would trigger a new election if it wins.

Ordinary people have little power over the government decisions that affect their lives. In addition to improving the elections to representative offices, we will campaign for a participatory direct democracy at the base of society. We will campaign for a grassroots democracy based on community assemblies open to all citizens like New England Town Meetings.

Mike Gravel: Replace Electoral College with direct election of President

The Electoral College has been responsible for two Presidents within the last three winning an election without winning a majority of the votes. This system of selecting presidents was a tool originally created to suppress democracy; historically, it has empowered slavers and segregationists. The injustice it has perpetuated continue today. The democratic option is direct election of the president. The US should abolish the Electoral College, moving to a system of direct election of the president.

Mike Gravel: Ranked choice voting replaces "lesser of two evils"

Our current first past the post system of democratic elections does not ask for a majority in order for a candidate to declare victory. Often times, voters will be asked to vote against their conscience and choose the "lesser of two evils." Ranked choice voting, or instant run-off voting, allows voters to rank candidates, giving their first vote to their preferred candidate. A candidate can only assume victory with a majority of first-round and run-off votes, making every vote count.

Wayne Messam: End barriers to voting

Across this country, voting rights are under attack as politicians create barriers that make it harder for people to register to vote and cast their ballots, cut back early voting, and engage in unconstitutional acts of voter suppression.

We must protect Americans' right to vote regardless of economic and societal status--not limit participation in the democratic process and discriminate against our own people. It's up to us to keep fighting against these attempts to limit the right to vote.

Marianne Williamson: Establish public financing for federal campaigns

IF I'M ELECTED, MY ADMINISTRATION WILL SUPPORT THE FOLLOWING: A Williamson administration would work assiduously to address the above-mentioned external issues, and I would help the American people connect the dots, understand what has happened, and work in their own communities to save our democracy.

Andrew Yang: Adopt ranked-choice voting model for all primaries

One reason we sometimes wind up with extreme politicians is that we have a one-round process that does not always reflect people's true preferences. Ranked choice voting would help reward candidates who command broad support and would lead to better results. The process matters.
