Survey of 2020 Presidential campaign websites: on Gun Control

Rocky De La Fuente: Supports "fair gun control" and Second Amendment

Barring a constitutional amendment, I support the right to bear arms under the Second Amendment. I support fair gun control legislation that provides a higher level of safety for the general public without violating the fundamental right to bear arms. (i.e., legislation that is limited to enhanced registration, training, logical weapons limitation by properly defined type, etc.)

Tom Steyer: Gun violence is a public health epidemic

Gun violence is a public health epidemic that claims far too many lives each year. Tom stands with students, parents, educators, law enforcement, victims of gun violence, and community members, and is ready to implement the urgent common-sense gun safety reforms we desperately need. His plan--titled "We Can End Gun Violence"--will establish universal background checks, ban large-capacity magazines and assault weapons, enact red flag laws, close loopholes, create a new Office of Gun Safety and licensing requirements, and provide resources to communities to reduce gun violence.

Mike Bloomberg: Close "boyfriend loophole," pass national red flag law

Mike's plan will require point-of-sale background checks for all gun sales and finally close the private sale loophole, which enables prohibited people to buy guns simply by finding unlicensed sellers at gun shows or on the Internet. It will require every gun buyer to get a permit before making a purchase. It will use sales records to identify crime guns and notify local police when individuals have been prohibited from having a gun.

Mike's plan will close the "boyfriend loophole" which allows domestic abusers to have guns, despite criminal convictions or restraining orders--simply because they are not married to their victims. It will pass a federal red flag law that expands extreme risk orders to 50 states. It will require gun buyers to be at least 21 years old to buy handguns and semi-automatic rifles and shotguns. And it will set a temporary ban on gun possession by assault and other violent misdemeanor offenders.

Mike Bloomberg: Ban assault weapons; hold gun industry accountable

Mike will reinstate the federal ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines; current assault weapons owners will be allowed to keep their guns but will have to report them to federal officials. He will require secure storage of firearms when they are not in use, which has been shown to reduce the risk of child gun injuries by up to 85 percent. He will also ban all guns in K-12 schools, colleges, and universities--except for law enforcement.

Mike's plan will repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) so that gunmakers and gun dealers will no longer have broad immunity from civil lawsuits. It will allow the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to treat guns like other household products so that the federal government will have the power to set safety requirements for gun technology. It will formally declare the gun violence crisis to be a public health emergency to expedite funds and research.

Joe Sestak: Strong proponent of common sense gun laws

I believe in the right to bear arms, but I am also a strong proponent of common sense gun laws, such as closing the "gun show loophole" (which allows people to avoid background checks by buying guns at gun shows and conventions or from other "private sellers"), closing the "gun kit" or "ghost gun" loophole (which allows people to buy portions of guns that are easy to assemble into functioning firearms), and creating a more effective national background check system, including by enabling states to add felons, domestic abusers, and other violent criminals to the background check database.

I also believe we must once again ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines. Having served in the armed forces for over thirty years, I know what weapons of war are, and I know that they do not belong in American communities. The horrifying mass shootings of recent years should be all the proof our lawmakers need to finally take action.

Eric Swalwell: National ban and buyback of semiautomatic assault weapons

Ending Gun Violence: No more turning a blind eye to American lives stolen by gun violence. We must enact truly universal background checks for all gun and ammunition purchases, do more to take guns away from domestic abusers, push states to adopt gun violence restraining order laws, and remove weapons of war from our communities once and for all. I'm the only candidate calling for a mandatory national ban and buyback of military-style semiautomatic assault weapons.

Marianne Williamson: Ban assault rifles & bump stocks

Our right to bear arms does not come without rules. As president I would support:

Andrew Yang: Three-tier gun licensing for common-sense safety

Most Americans agree on common-sense safety requirements and restrictions on firearms.

Howard Schultz: False choice between gun ban and unlimited gun ownership

Today, believe it or not, a majority of teens worry they could get shot while they are in school. Now this is horrific. Unconscionable. A shameful statistic that none of us should find acceptable or accept. It is the highest responsibility of our government to protect its citizens. economy But once again, the majority of the country, most Americans, want to see a solution to this.

Some on the far Left want to ban guns altogether. The far Right has pushed back on even reasonable limitations on gun ownership. I believe it's time to enact common-sense gun reforms that are supported by a clear majority of the American people. We must protect people's constitutional right to bear arms, and make it safer to do so, through universal and enhanced background checks with no loopholes. If you are a criminal or mentally ill, you should not be able to obtain a gun. But most importantly, no parent should be afraid to take their kid to school because of fear of gun violence.

John Kasich: Learn from mass shooting tragedies and take action

John Kasich supports the Second Amendment and has signed multiple bills to protect gun rights. As a pragmatic conservative Governor Kasich also recognizes the need for common-sense solutions to our nation's problems. In recent years, our country has been devastated by a dramatic increase in school shootings and mass killings--many with the use of semi-automatic weapons. Governor Kasich believes that we should not be afraid to learn from these tragedies and take appropriate action.

John Kasich has spoken out on the need for reasonable reforms to prevent future massacres--including the potential of expanding background checks on gun sales and limiting the ability to sell weapons that have often been used in mass killings.

The 2nd Amendment is one of the most divisive issues in our country. Leadership requires the willingness to tackle these issues and to find solutions. Our country and our children deserve that leadership.
