Survey of 2020 Presidential campaign websites: on Principles & Values

Gloria La Riva: Make the essentials of life into constitutional rights

The U.S. has more than enough so that all the essentials of life--food, housing, water, education, health care and a job or basic income can be guaranteed rights--rather than distributed only for profit. Create a completely free and public healthcare system. Make education free--cancel all student debt. Fully fund rebuilding of the infrastructure in transport, water and utility systems. Stop all foreclosures and evictions. End all discrimination based on ability/disability.

Joe Sestak: Walked 422 miles across Pennsylvania, in Senate campaign

In Joe's second Senate race, Joe launched his campaign by walking 422 miles across Pennsylvania, from the border with New Jersey to that with Ohio, stating that "we are in a fight for the soul of America" at the kickoff and throughout the remainder of the election. He held a town hall each day in small towns and cities, and then went to each of the remaining 67 counties. Simultaneously, he published his vision in a policy-based book, "Walking in Your Shoes to Restore the American Dream."

However, the Democratic Senate leadership directed Joe to "stop walking and just fundraise." When Joe demurred, the Democratic leadership sought a primary opponent, funneling over $6 million into false opposition ads that the Washington Post assigned its highest rating of falsity, to win the primary, but losing the general election.

Pete Buttigieg: The world needs America at our best

The world needs America. But not just any America. It has to be America at our best: the America that possessed the forward-looking vision to do things like confront Nazism and rebuild Europe and even invent the Internet inside a research arm of our Defense Department. It has to be an America that knows how to make better the everyday life of its citizens and of people around the world, knowing how much one has to do with the other.

Don Blankenship: Grew up poor, but didn't know it

My life, like most of yours, has had its ups and downs. My father and my mom each worked 80 to 90 hours per week, which taught me to be independent at a very early age.

As the saying goes, we were poor but didn't know it. We had an outhouse that was nicer than the one most of our neighbors had. We always had shoes. My mom was a McCoy, although not directly related to those who feuded with the Hatfield's in the hills of Kentucky where I was born.

My early years were occupied by baseball, pumping gasoline into coal miners' cars at our family gas station, and watching Gunsmoke, Andy Griffith, Bonanza, Wagon Train, and Rawhide--that is, after we got our first television when I was seven years old. The town I lived in most of my first 18 years was Delorme, West Virginia, population of 400 at the time--now maybe 200.

Howie Hawkins: Democracy needs socialism; socialize many economic sectors

Democracy needs socialism. Progressive reforms will never be secure as long as the major means of production are in the hands of a super-rich oligarchy whose concentrated economic power translates into concentrated political power. The failure to face this reality is how the managed capitalism advanced by Democratic Party "socialists" comes up short. As Bernie Sanders said in his 2015 speech on democratic socialism, "I don't believe government should own the means of production." We should join with these progressives in fighting for reforms, but we should not be politically naive. Progressive reforms are not secure as long as the property-based power structure of the capitalist oligarchy remains intact.

Pete Buttigieg: Ensure that America's future is better than its past

Pete belongs to the generation that came of age with school shootings, the generation that provided the majority of the troops in the conflicts after 9/11, the generation that is on the business end of climate change, and the generation that-- unless we take action--stands to be the first to be worse off economically than their parents.

Pete is laying out a vision, values, and policies to ensure that America's future is better than its past. We need to secure a future in which every American has the freedom to live a life of their choosing; where our republic grows more and not less democratic; where racial justice is a reality and not a dream; where we've put an end to endless war; where we've summoned the national will to meet the challenge of climate change; where everyone has the health care they need; and where everyone has the chance to find purpose and belonging in our economy and our country.

Pete Buttigieg: We cannot find greatness in the past

There is no 'again' in the real world. WE CANNOT FIND GREATNESS IN THE PAST.

There is no honest politics that revolves around the word 'again.' In the era of automation and globalization, major changes are going to happen whether we're ready or not. The question isn't: "Can we stop these changes and go back to the past?" The question needs to be: "How can we make sure these changes work for us?" America is at its best when we master change for the benefit of every American.

Steve Bullock: Previously served as Montana Attorney General

Steve Bullock is the two-term governor and former attorney general of Montana. Bullock has advanced a strong progressive agenda in a deep red state and he is the only Democrat to be re-elected statewide in a state President Trump won.

Bullock is a Montana native and received his undergraduate degree from Claremont McKenna College and his law degree with honors from Columbia University Law School in New York. He and his wife Lisa have three children, Caroline, Alexandria and Cameron.

Howard Schultz: Two massive failures: One of character; one of institutions

During the past few decades, there have been two mounting, massive failures in our country. One of character, and one of institutions. First, I want to speak of the failure of character. When elected officials in D.C. stir up division rather than craft consensus, when they opt for revenge politics instead of problem solving, one party or the other may win the moment, but the American people lose the biggest battle of all: and that is the battle of our national character.

A lack of character at the highest levels of government is related to the second significant failure of our times, which is institutional: primarily our two-party system, which has devolved into a self-interested duopoly, is not serving the American people. When our political parties accept millions of dollars in contributions from lobbyists, Congress acts in the interest of lobbyists, not in the interest of the America people.

Howard Schultz: Science is real, and so is religion and faith

The center is the heart of America. Let's be clear about what that heart is:

America's heart is principled, it encompasses our core values, and it is our common ground.

America's heart is aspirational in its dreams, yet realistic in its plans. In America's heart, common sense and reason prevail.

America's heart does not favor partisan ideas; it opts for the best solutions, no matter where they come from.

America's heart also embraces objective truth,--yes, truth!--and our truth informs our problem solving.

In America's heart, science is real, and so is religion and faith.

In America's heart, all people are equal--no matter your gender, your race, your religion, your sexual orientation, or your station in life.

In America's heart, we stand as we always have, with our allies around the world.

America's heart is compassion and humanity. In America's heart is not "We the faction" or "We the tribe." It is, and always has been, and needs to be again, "We the People".

Howard Schultz: Leadership brings talented people together to solve problems

For four decades I've [made opportunities available to employees] this as a business leader. Today, I'm humbly asking whether, or not, I can do this in another way: as a public servant.

Through the years, I've learned a great deal about leadership: What is leadership? Leadership is about having the humility to listen to different people and opinions. Leadership is about bringing talented, passionate people together to solve complex problems. Leadership is about making tough choices for unselfish reasons. Leadership is also about personal accountability. And most importantly, Leadership is about earning people's trust.

This past year, I've traveled the country. I've heard and I've learned so many new things. Among them is that the American people are longing for more honesty, authentic and real leadership in Washington, D.C., that's finally working for them. Our political class in Washington, D.C., is not solving the problems we need to solve.

Howard Schultz: Centrist independent outside of the two-party system

On January 27, 2019, Howard Schultz former CEO and Chairman of Starbucks, announced he is seriously thinking of running for president and, if he does, will do so as a centrist independent outside of the two-party system.

Our team is supporting Howard as he visits communities around the country to discuss his new book, From The Ground Up, shares the challenges his family faced, and listens to the stories of others who, like him, overcame much to achieve the American Dream.

We are at a pivotal moment in our country's history; America is divided like never before. It's time to ask whether the two-party system is capable of meeting the challenge before us. The pundits will say this can't be done, but the American people will decide if that's the case. America's best chapters are ahead--it's time we start writing them.
