2020s senatorial press release: on Environment

Catherine Cortez Masto: Applauds EPA funding to protect Nevada's surface water

Cortez Masto applauded the Environmental Protection Agency for awarding $20.6 million in State Revolving Funds to Nevada to support infrastructure projects that protect surface water and provide safe drinking water. "We're glad to see these funds made available for improvements to water systems all over the Silver State. Everyone in Nevada deserves clean drinking water and reliable water infrastructure, and we'll keep working in the U.S. Senate to ensure that's the case."

Maria Cantwell: $16M for Fisheries Science Center's salmon life-cycle models

Senator Maria Cantwell announced that the Seattle-based Northwest Fisheries Science Center will receive $16.2 million from a Cantwell-authored program included in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

"NOAA scientists need funding for groundbreaking research into how salmon are adapting to the changing climate and dealing with threats like stormwater pollution here in Washington," said Sen. Cantwell. "Salmon are central to the culture, economy, and marine ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest, and this investment in science will help us make the right choices and help protect salmon for years to come."

This funding will help advance cutting-edge research including salmon life-cycle models, understanding how salmon are adapting to climate change, and studies to better understand the impact of tire-related chemical runoff, stormwater, and other environmental pollutants on salmon survival. This center and its nearly 300 scientists are a key part of restoring Puget Sound.

JD Vance: Too many unfunded Clean Water Act mandates in Ohio cities

Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and J.D. Vance (R-OH) called on the EPA to engage with Ohio communities, weigh each community's financial capacity, and provide them with flexibility as they work to fulfill their unfunded federal mandate under the Clean Water Act. "We urge you to fully utilize the 2023 CWA Financial Capability Assessment Guidance and engage with communities to take a wholistic approach in calculating an area's financial capacity for CWA compliance as Ohio communities work to fulfill their unfunded federal mandate," the Senators wrote.

[Their letter to the EPA noted that] "there are a number of Ohio communities under federal consent decrees regarding CWA compliance, including Cleveland, Cincinnati, Akron, Toledo and Youngstown. While each of these communities is committed to reaching compliance with the CWA in a timely manner, they are also encumbered by aging infrastructure and constrained financial positions due to a legacy of deindustrialization."
