Jeanne Shaheen in 2020s senatorial press release

On Energy & Oil: Allow efficient use energy that would be wasted

Shaheen re-introduced the Heat Efficiency through Applied Technology (HEAT) Act, legislation that would address the major regulatory barriers hampering the deployment of heat recovery technologies, such as combined heat and power (CHP) and waste heat to power (WHP). By making efficient use of energy that would otherwise be wasted, CHP and WHP systems help manufacturers save money in energy costs and make them more competitive.

On Energy & Oil: Easier for citizens to participate in energy regulation

Shaheen reintroduced legislation to create an Office of Public Participation and Consumer Advocacy at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), [which regulates] wholesale power markets and natural gas pipelines. While FERC's decisions determine which energy projects are constructed and significantly influence the energy prices consumers pay, private citizens have expressed frustration that participating in FERC's complex proceedings is extremely challenging.

On Gun Control: Stop those convicted of domestic violence from buying guns

Shaheen helped introduce the Domestic Violence Loophole Closure Act. The bipartisan legislation would close the background check loophole and ensure that any individual convicted of domestic violence--whether it is in criminal or military court--cannot legally purchase a firearm. Said Senator Shaheen, "We know that domestic violence is a red flag for further violence and we must do more to prevent the next attack."

On Gun Control: If you can't pass a background check, no gun

Shaheen and Maggie Hassan joined Chris Murphy to reintroduce the Background Check Expansion Act, which would expand federal background checks to all gun sales. Under current federal law, unlicensed or private sellers are not required to conduct a background check prior to transferring a firearm. Approximately 90% of Americans support comprehensive background checks. "If you can't pass a background check, you shouldn't have access to a gun--that's just common sense," said Shaheen.

On Tax Reform: Bipartisan effort to correct error in tax code

Shaheen worked with a bipartisan group to introduce the Restoring Investments in Improvements Act. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act made changes to the tax code, allowing businesses to write off costs associated with improving facilities. A drafting error required leaseholders to write those expenses off over 40 years. "The tax law was written in secret and rushed through Congress by Republicans, so this mistake was overlooked. I'm glad to join this bipartisan bill and right this wrong," said Shaheen.

On War & Peace: Trump needs Congressional approval for Iran military action

Shaheen issued the following statement on requiring approval for military action against Iran: "The American people should have a say on matters of war, and Congress is meant to be their voice," said Shaheen. "That's why Congress' oversight role is enshrined in the constitution and shouldn't be ignored by any administration. I will vote in favor of this important amendment so that the Trump administration understands that it must come to Congress before using military force against Iran."
