2020s senatorial press release: on Welfare & Poverty

Kirsten Gillibrand: $50 million annually to end food deserts

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced her Healthy Food Financing Initiative Reauthorization Act, legislation that would help end food deserts. Food deserts are areas where a significant portion of residents don't have easy access to a grocery store and affordable, nutritious food. Instead, they are forced to rely on corner and convenience stores, which often sell little to no fresh produce, meat or dairy and whose prices are higher than those of a typical supermarket.

Gillibrand's legislation would provide $50 million annually in mandatory federal funding for the Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI).

"An easily accessible grocery store is a basic necessity, but for years, some residents of Buffalo haven't had consistent access to one," said Senator Gillibrand. "That means that they have to travel miles outside their neighborhood just to buy staple groceries, and for residents without a car, that can mean a multi-hour journey by foot or public transit. It's unacceptable."

Chris Murphy: Raise $41,500 salary limit for subsidized childcare

[Transcript of Senate floor speech]: A family's life falls apart when they don't have access to good child care. In my state, I've had 124,000 parents report that their work has been disrupted by child care issues. 89% of [childcare providers] report that they've had difficulty hiring staff; 60% of them say that right now they are understaffed; and 70% of them say that they have waitlists for new families.

That delivers an enormous harm to families but also to our workforce. I met a young woman and she's got a very young child. They are on the waitlist for a subsidized child care slot. She can't get into the workforce. Why? Because she has to stay home to take care of her young child.

In Connecticut, we have a program called Care for Kids. This program gives lower income families some subsidy so that they can afford child care. But that program cuts off for a one child family at $41,500 a year in income. Now that's a lower middle income salary in Connecticut.

Mark Warner: $93M for LIHEAP: home heating for low income families

Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine (both D-VA) announced $93,123,844 in federal funding to help low-income individuals and families in Virginia pay for home heating costs, cover utility bills, and help weatherize homes to lower their energy bills as winter approaches. The funding is awarded through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) [via] the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

"With winter just around the corner, it is crucial that every Virginian is able to stay safe from the cold," said the senators. "Today's funding will help ensure that families and individuals throughout the Commonwealth have the support they need to pay their bills and lower their energy costs." The funding will be allocated to the Commonwealth and distributed on a need basis. Sens. Warner and Kaine have been strong advocates for lowering energy costs and have consistently advocated for funding for LIHEAP.
