2020 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Abortion

Bill Lee: Seeing premature granddaughter strengthened my resolve

I've proposed legislation that would defend and protect the life of an unborn baby from the time their heartbeat can be detected. I want to share a personal story that has strengthened my resolve.

A few months ago, my son and his wife had identical twin baby girls, delivered months before they were due, at a time when most babies their size would still be in their mother's womb. When I walked into the neonatal intensive care unit, I stared in wonder at a 1-lb-5-oz baby girl with tubes and cords and monitors, fighting for her life. As I watched little Annie, I was reminded once again that every life is precious. Every life is precious, and we will support pro-life policy in this state because everything precious is worth protecting.

Tate Reeves: Our commitment to pro-life values must never waver

We have worked hard in Mississippi to make this the safest state in the country for our innocent unborn children. This is noble and it is essential. Our commitment to our pro-life values must never waver.

Henry McMaster: Prevent funneling of taxpayer dollars to Planned Parenthood

Today is the anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade. The right to life is the most precious of rights--and the most fragile. We must never let it be taken for granted. For the third year in a row, my budget includes a proviso preventing the funneling of taxpayer dollars to abortion providers like Planned Parenthood. You are considering two important pieces of legislation. Both will protect the sanctity of life--through heartbeat or personhood. Send them to me.

Brian Kemp: We need to protect the unborn and the born

During debate on the heartbeat bill, I would always start with a simple statement: Georgia is a state that values life. Honestly, it's hard to disagree with that. We live in a place where every person matters - young or old, rich or poor, any race from any place. As a pro-life Governor, I believe that we need to protect the unborn and the born. We have to defend those in the womb and then champion those when they leave the delivery room.

Kim Reynolds: State constitution does not grant right to abortion

As we begin 2020, I'm focused on the overall wellness of all Iowans, in every part of the State, in all stages of life. And when I say all stages of life, I mean to include the unborn. We must protect life by making clear, through an amendment, that our constitution does not grant a right to abortion. It's time, and unfortunately it's necessary.

Phil Murphy: Codify woman's full reproductive rights into state law

I'm proud we are fighting the Trump administration's efforts to block women from receiving vital information critical for them to make important decisions. We've protected funding for Planned Parenthood and women's health care. This must go beyond just providing funding to make up for the loss of Title X money. It's about protecting a woman's fundamental and constitutional right to full reproductive freedom. Let's commit to codifying a woman's full reproductive rights in state law.

Jim Justice: Without any question whatsoever, I stand with the unborn

I can tell you that without any question whatsoever, I stand with the unborn.

Ralph Northam: End laws restricting woman's right to direct her health care

It's time to end the laws that restrict a woman's right to direct her own health care. Virginia has put these in place over the past 20 years or so. They're not about health care. They are about injecting politics and the government into the relationship between a woman and her physician.

You don't have to be a doctor to know that's bad medicine. No more will legislators in Richmond--most of whom are men--be telling women what they should and should not be doing with their bodies.
