2020 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Civil Rights

J.B. Pritzker: Pride flag flew at state capitol for first tie in history

I asked Secretary of State Jesse White to fly a Pride flag over the Illinois state capitol for the first time in our history. After all, we have a choice about how we tell our story, and I want our Illinois story to be one of hope, inclusion, opportunity and kindness. I want it to be inspired every day by the fundamental goodness of the people who live and work here and who struggle so hard for a fair shot.

Andy Beshear: Restore voting rights to non-violent offenders

In our first month in office, my administration took immediate action: I restored voting rights to more than 140,000 Kentuckians that had committed nonviolent felonies. It's time to pass a constitutional amendment that automatically restores voting rights to non-violent offenders that complete their sentences.

Andy Beshear: Diversity isn't a buzz word; it's a value

And I have been intentional about building an inclusive cabinet that reflects the people of Kentucky and who will represent their interests. Diversity isn't a buzz word or a metric. It's a value. It makes us a better government and makes our state more attractive to investment.

Andrew Cuomo: Prosecute violent hate as domestic terrorism

This issue of the anti-Semitism, but broader than just anti-Semitism, the hate, the anger, the division is the most frightening issue that keeps me up at night. I hate when government says, 'we offer thoughts and prayers.' Thoughts and prayers. Yeah, it's not your job. You're government. You don't do thoughts and prayers. You do something. I want to propose a domestic terrorism law because these people are domestic terrorists and I want them prosecuted that way.

Ralph Northam: Remove discriminatory language from Virginia laws

We convened a Commission to examine overtly discriminatory language that's still on our books. These include laws banning school integration, prohibiting black and white Virginians from living in the same neighborhoods, and prohibiting people from getting married unless they're the same race. These words remain enshrined in law, even as many of the Acts have been overturned. It's time to remove these words from Virginia's books.
