2020 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Gun Control

John Carney: Keep guns out of the hands of those who would harm

We passed the Beau Biden Gun Violence Prevention Act and another, similar red flag law. The idea behind both pieces of legislation was really simple. We should keep firearms out of the hands of those intent on harming themselves or others. Family members and mental health providers can now raise a concern, and a judge decides whether to intervene. These laws have already been used 35 times to date. And they have helped save lives.

Gina Raimondo: Close loopholes; ban assault weapons

Protecting our future means protecting our neighborhoods, workplaces and schools from gun violence. Even one tragedy with an untraceable, homemade firearm is one too many. Loopholes that allow extremely dangerous people to get guns need to be closed. Military-style assault weapons don't belong in our communities and should be banned. So this year, I will once again propose a comprehensive package of gun reforms. Stand with me and keep Rhode Island safe.

Jim Justice: The Second Amendment is ingrained in me

I'm a sportsman. I love the outdoors. The second amendment is ingrained in me forevermore. There is no question about it, whether you love me or don't love me. It's just simple fact.

Ralph Northam: Common sense gun laws do not violate Second Amendment

Last summer, after the terrible shooting in Virginia Beach, I called the previous General Assembly into special session to take immediate action. I proposed eight common-sense measures, designed to keep firearms away from dangerous persons. But there was no action. The measures I proposed did not receive a hearing.

We are back, with eight common-sense measures to keep dangerous persons away from firearms.

This common-sense legislation does not violate the Second Amendment. No one is calling out the National Guard. No one is cutting off your electricity or turning off the Internet. No one is going door-to-door to confiscate guns. These laws are intended to keep Virginians safe. Period. It's time to act.
