2020 TN Senate race: on Homeland Security

Manny Sethi: Agrees with Trump that Antifa is terrorist organization

Sethi echoed the comments of many of his Republican counterparts in praising Trump's condemnation of the riots in Nashville and other cities. Those riots followed what were intended to be peaceful demonstrations to protest racism and brutality by police officers. Sethi said he "agreed with President Trump that the looting and the violence was related to Antifa, and applauds the president in declaring the group a terrorist organization."

Bill Hagerty: Give military tools to complete their missions; repair VA

Our most important national security asset isn't technology nor infrastructure, it's the men and women of our Armed Forces. We must do everything we can to serve those who have sacrificed so much. He will protect Fort Campbell, Arnold Air Force Base, and Millington Naval Base. He will always fight to make sure our active duty servicemen--and their families--have the tools they need to complete their missions, and he will work to repair a broken VA system that too often fails our veterans.

James Mackler: Let immigrants serve in military, as they always have

70 years ago, President Harry Truman signed Executive Order 9981 to begin integrating our Armed Forces "without regard to race, color, religion or national origin." Immigrants have fought alongside fellow Americans in every conflict we've faced since before the founding of our nation. An immigrant officer is credited with professionalizing George Washington's Army at Valley Forge during the Revolutionary War. Today, because of President Truman's actions, the world's strongest fighting force is made up of volunteers with national origins from across the globe.

Earlier this month, "some immigrant U.S. Army reservists and recruits who enlisted in the military with a promised path to citizenship are being abruptly discharged."

Fighting in Iraq, I know we would not have been able to complete our missions without standing side by side with new Americans and those who hoped to fulfill that dream.

James Mackler: Allow transgender people to serve in the military

Pro-LGBT Tennesseans quickly blasted President Donald Trump's new position on prohibiting transgender people from serving in the military, calling it "not rational" and hypocritical for someone who skirted military service. Others defended the president's abrupt new policy announced on Twitter, saying it's his job alone to determine the makeup of the military.

James Mackler, a former Army helicopter pilot with the 101st Airborne Division and a Democratic U.S. Senate candidate, said such policies detract from mission readiness. "Having served in combat, I know we are better warfighters when we bring all of our assets to bear, and excluding entire classes of people without evidence that they do anything but strengthen our forces is shortsighted, counter productive, and undermines mission readiness," he said in a statement.
