Cristina Tzintzun Ramirez in 2020 TX Senate race

On Abortion: Women, not politicians, should decide reproductive rights

We should leave it to women and not politicians to decide when they are ready to make a family. A woman's right to choose what is best for her body, her family, and her health is a guaranteed right under the U.S. Constitution and Roe v. Wade- one that Cristina will work to protect. She will ensure that access to contraception and safe abortion are guaranteed in any health plan that she supports.

On Civil Rights: Defend LGBTQ+ Rights, supports protective laws

Cristina will ensure that full equality for everyone in the LGBTQ+ community is enshrined into federal law by supporting the Equality Act, which would prevent discrimination against people based on their sexual orientation and gender identity, the Every Child Deserves a Family Act, which will make it illegal for anyone receiving Federal assistance to discriminate against LGBTQ children and families when placing children for adoption and foster care, the Therapeutic Fraud Prevention Act, which bans conversion therapy and the Do No Harm Act, which prohibits the use of personal religious beliefs as an excuse to discriminate.

On Civil Rights: Combat White Supremacy and hate crimes

Cristina recognizes that we need to address the growing threat of violence driven by white supremacy in our communities. No Texan-- and no American-- should ever fear violence because of the color of their skin, the God they pray to, or any other identity they carry. As Senator, Cristina would direct funding to the Department of Justice to investigate hate crimes and treat acts of violence fueled by white supremacy as acts of domestic terrorism.

On Civil Rights: Pass Voting Rights Advancement Act, make elections a holiday

Some people in power are afraid of democracy. They want a government that serves their interests, not ours, which is why we need to shield our democracy against ongoing voter suppression and international efforts to interfere in our elections. When Cristina goes to Washington one of her top priorities will be to pass the Voting Rights Advancement Act and making election day a national federal holiday so everyone can participate easily and equally in our democracy.

On Corporations: Increase funding for Small Business Administration

Small businesses are the engine of the U.S. economy. In Texas, small businesses represent over 99 percent of businesses and 45 percent of our workforce. As Senator, Cristina would ensure that Texas entrepreneurs can succeed by increasing funding for the Small Business Administration to provide access to low-interest loans and other programs to support aspiring business owners.

On Crime: Abolish mandatory minimums & private for-profit prisons

Cristina recognizes that our current criminal legal system unfairly targets the low-income, and black and brown communities, not only because of misguided policies like the Drug War, but also because of corporations that profit off of imprisonment. She would also advocate for abolishing private prisons and mandatory minimums, ensuring that our government invests in schools rather than prisons. Lastly, she would support federal abolition of the death penalty.

On Drugs: Supports the legalization of marijuana

As Senator, Cristina would support the legalization of marijuana, as well as efforts to address the long-term harm done in communities of color such as expunging records of those with low-level marijuana offenses.

On Education: Make Universal Childcare and Pre-K a guaranteed right

Currently, the average Texas family pays $9,324 a year just for childcare for an infant child. On average, that's $777 per month. With universal childcare and Pre-K as a guaranteed right, Texans won't have to choose between work and family, and every child will have better education and care.

Fully funding our education system and tackling the crisis of student debt is just basic common sense and sound economic policy. It means we invest in our greatest asset: our people. Cristina will make sure our kids go to great schools with great teachers by fully funding the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which currently does not adequately meet the needs of our students and ensuring that teachers are compensated and trained like the professionals they are.

On Education: Cancel student debt; make public universities tuition free

Cristina supports canceling student debt for millions of Americans that are struggling to pay back their loans. Cristina also supports efforts to make public universities and community college tuition-free. We'll continue building the strongest economy in the world by investing appropriately in education.

On Energy & Oil: Rejoin Paris Climate Accord

Texas has long been a global hub for energy, and Cristina believes that Texas can continue to lead as we transition to a clean energy future that protects our climate. She supports reentering the Paris Climate Accord because climate change is a global threat that requires us to work together with our international partners.

On Families & Children: Paid Parental Leave keeps families healthy and happy

There are just five countries in the world that don't offer moms paid time off to be with their newborn babies--and the United States is one of them. Paid parental leave keeps parents and babies healthy and happy. It gives moms much needed time to recover after childbirth and allows babies to spend time bonding with their parents, supporting their brain development and overall health.

On Free Trade: Smart trade policy protects workers, not just businesses

Our current trade policy involves escalating trade wars that only increase prices for working and middle class families. Cristina believes that smart trade policy does not only protect the interests of businesses, but also the interests of our workers. Cristina will advocate for policy that protects labor rights, enforces environmental regulations, and maintains a level playing field between our international trade partners.

On Gun Control: Advocates for gun legislation majority of Americans support

Cristina believes our representatives should fight for victims of gun violence and their families, and Texans that are demanding change, and not the NRA. Cristina has endorsed the Peace Plan for a Safer America. Cristina will advocate for gun legislation that the majority of Americans support, including universal background checks, banning and buying back assault weapons like AR-15s and AK-47s, and holding the gun lobby accountable for the harm they have done to our communities.

On Health Care: Supports Medicare for All

Cristina would support Medicare for All because it is the most efficient and cost effective way to make sure every American has quality healthcare, and it will allow small businesses and entrepreneurs to accelerate their growth instead of trying to worry about how to cover the cost of healthcare for themselves and their employees. By any measure, our current system has failed us. Cristina will build a healthcare system that works for people, not for profit.

On Immigration: Legalize status of DREAMers, other hardworking immigrants

Cristina supports extending citizenship to DREAMers, who are Americans in every way except on paper. In addition to the DREAMers, we need to legalize the status of the millions of hardworking and honest immigrants that have been part of our communities for years. We need an immigration system that allows future generations to come here safely and legally, that fills our labor needs, and that empowers all immigrants to live their full humanity as families and human beings.

On Jobs: Raise minimum wage to $15 and tie it to inflation

The American people need a raise. In Texas, our minimum wage is just $7.25 an hour. We need to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour and ensure that it is tied to inflation. Wages should be based on the needs of American families, not on the inconsistency of political will in Washington.

On Jobs: Get equal pay for women through Paycheck Fairness Act

Enact Equal Pay for Equal Work through the Paycheck Fairness Act so that we can close the gender pay gap that has left millions of women-- especially Latina and African American women-- behind.

On Jobs: Expand right to unionize; fully fund Labor agencies

The American people work hard and they should be compensated for it. Cristina supports expanding the rights of American workers to unionize to ensure they can negotiate fair wages and conditions with their employers. We must fully fund the Department of Labor Wage and Hour, OSHA and the EEOC to ensure American workers' rights are protected.

On Social Security: Supports Social Security 2100 Act

Half of American households over the age of 55 have no retirement savings. We must ensure older Americans and families can live in dignity and with security by supporting measures like the Social Security 2100 Act, which protects and strengthen social security for decades to come.

On Government Reform: No corporate PAC money, but other PACs ok

TzintzŁn Ramirez, meanwhile, could tempt criticism with her acknowledgment last month that she narrowed her campaign's initial pledge against accepting all PAC money -- a promise that Beto O'Rourke famously adhered to -- to just corporate PAC money. She said she dialed back the pledge after hearing from labor unions who wanted to have the option to give to her through their political arms.

On Principles & Values: Every single family wants the best for their children

My mom is the oldest of nine kids from Mexico and my dad's a white American that met her while traveling in a VW bus in Mexico in the '70s. I grew up with this great perspective that, while there were a lot of differences in my Anglo and Mexican families, at the end of the day every single family wants the same thing, regardless of where they come from, the color of their skin, who they pray to or who they love. We all want our children to be safe and healthy and go to great schools.

On Civil Rights: Real democracy a threat to people in power

In 2018, TzintzŁn Ramirez helped lead an initiative through the Texas Youth Power Alliance that registered one in five Texas voters in 2018. She said they saw a 500% increase in the youth vote, and a 250% increase in the Latino vote. "I know real democracy will be a threat to people in power," TzintzŁn Ramirez said. "We are going to get more young people, more people of color out to vote, more low income people, and that's how we build a democracy, an economy and a country for everyone."

On Gun Control: Ban assault style weapons, pass background checks

When it comes to gun control, TzintzŁn Ramirez said she was the best shot in her family growing up and supports protecting the second amendment, but she said she also supports mandatory gun buybacks. "I've been waiting my entire adult life to see Congress do very basic things like pass universal background checks, banning assault style weapons and instead we've been teaching a generation of young people to play dead in their classrooms," TzintzŁn Ramirez said.

On Health Care: Every person should be able to go to a doctor

Another one of her key issues is health care. Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the country with one in six Texans not having healthcare. TzintzŁn Ramirez supports Medicare for all for that reason. "In the richest nation in the world, I think every person should be able to go to the doctor when they're sick and have the highest quality healthcare when they need it," TzintzŁn Ramirez said.

On Gun Control: We all want background checks & ban on weapons of war

MJ Hegar's rivals pounced after she rejected Beto O'Rourke's call for mandatory buybacks of assault weapons--reflecting a major fault line in the field of Democrats angling to take down Sen. John Cornyn next year.

Cristina Tzintzun Ramirez rejected Hegar's stance. "Without a mandatory buyback program, we're leaving weapons of war in our communities. That's a recipe for violence," she argued on Twitter. "Our children's lives are on the line. This isn't a time for political caution." campaign, noting that her 2-year-old son is at risk. "The most harrowing place I will ever take him is his kindergarten classroom," she said.

"These policies are not controversial," Tzintzun Ramirez said of universal background checks and a ban on weapons of war. "We do not have elected officials that are willing to enact the will of the majority of Americans. If we do not have elected officials that are willing to actually represent the will of the American people, then we elect people that do."
