The Hill 2020s: on Abortion

Joe O`Dea: Access to abortion in first 20 weeks, but ban after that

Democrats are unconvinced that O'Dea is the kind of moderate he's projecting himself to be. While he has vocalized support for abortion access within the first 20 weeks of pregnancy and with limited exceptions afterward, The Colorado Sun [reports] that he signed a petition in favor of putting a ban on abortions after 22 weeks with limited exceptions on the 2020 ballot. They also highlight his support for Trump's three Supreme Court appointees, who would ultimately be a part of the majority opinion in overturning Roe v. Wade.

The communications director for O'Dea acknowledged that while O'Dea did sign a petition for the abortion ban, he reiterated in a statement that "Joe supports a woman's right to choose in the first 5 months of pregnancy, and opposes late term abortion. He'll vote that way. There will be some who don't agree with Joe's well established opposition to late term abortion just as there are Republicans who disagree with his support for abortion rights early on."

Shane Hazel: Supports bodily autonomy & right to health privacy

[GOP Gov. Brian] Kemp has touted signing the "toughest abortion ban in the nation," Georgia's "heartbeat bill" (HB 481) in 2019. The new law went into effect this year and essentially prohibits abortions once a fetal heart beat is detected, which proponents argue is typically about six weeks of pregnancy. The new law has exceptions for rape and incest if a police report is filed.

Kemp has vowed to continue to fight for life, while [Democratic opponent Stacey] Abrams argues that women should have the freedom to make their own medical decisions and that forcing women to carry a pregnancy places women at risk of poverty and maternal mortality, especially as Georgia is in the top five states with the highest maternal deaths. Abrams plans to increase availability of Plan B and emergency contraceptives, if elected.

Hazel, though not clearly defined on his website, appears to support bodily autonomy and states, "You have a right to your health. You have a right to health privacy."
