Amy Klobuchar in 2020 Vice Presidential prospects

On Crime: Appealed conviction downgrading felony to avoid deportation

Elsayed Salim, was convicted of failing to declare a secondary income that put him above the threshold for welfare. A judge sentenced Salim to 364 days in jail--deliberately attempting to protect him from deportation by keeping his sentencing under a year which downgraded the case from a felony to a gross misdemeanor. Klobuchar appealed the decision, lobbying for an upgrade and condemning the state's judges for "letting offenders off the hook too easily." Mr. Salim was subsequently deported.

On Government Reform: Protect voting rights with early voting, mail-in ballots

While President Trump was in the White House ordering a mail-in ballot people in Wisconsin are standing in garbage bags with masks, standing in line having to choose between their health and their right to vote. Now nearly 20 of them are sick, including a poll worker. We can't let that happen in November. That's why Ron Wyden and I are pushing for our bill with the support of Michelle Obama, the civil rights groups, to keep pushing to make sure that we have both vote by mail and early voting.

On Government Reform: Expand early voting, no excuse absentee vote by mail

Klobuchar announced The Natural Disaster and Emergency Ballot Act of 2020 alongside Sen. Ron Wyden, which would expand early in-person voting and extend "no-excuse absentee vote-by-mail" to all states. The bill would specifically "ensure that voters in all states have 20 days of early in-person voting and no-excuse absentee vote-by-mail and ensure states begin processing votes cast during early voting or by mail 14 days before Election Day to avoid delays in counting votes on Election Day."

On Environment: Supports EPA agreement on St. Louis River contamination

Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, and Stauber, announced the Environmental Protection Agency signed a $4.5 million agreement to remediate contaminated sediment in the St. Louis River Area of Concern on Lake Superior. "Lake Superior is also a vital component of our tourism and shipping industries," Stauber stated. "By investing in the health and vitality of the St. Louis River, we are preserving this national treasure for future generations to enjoy."

On Principles & Values: A passion for political compromise

Klobuchar's theory seems to be that the polarization of the United States is overstated and that there's a middle ground to recapture, powered by distaste for the other options on offer. "If you are tired of the extremes in our politics, of the noise and the nonsense, you have a home with me," Klobuchar said in New Hampshire. If there's a base out there with a passion for political compromise, she'll find it.

On Principles & Values: OpEd: Reputation for screaming & demeaning staff

Klobuchar developed a reputation for the consistent and extreme abuse of her staff. Her rages "regularly left employees in tears," BuzzFeed News reported. Former staffers say she screamed at them, demeaned them, threw objects at them. Before she revised it, her parental-leave policy forced new parents to "remain with the office for three times as many weeks as they had been gone," sources told the New York Times.
