2020 Vice Presidential prospects: on Government Reform

Amy Klobuchar: Protect voting rights with early voting, mail-in ballots

While President Trump was in the White House ordering a mail-in ballot people in Wisconsin are standing in garbage bags with masks, standing in line having to choose between their health and their right to vote. Now nearly 20 of them are sick, including a poll worker. We can't let that happen in November. That's why Ron Wyden and I are pushing for our bill with the support of Michelle Obama, the civil rights groups, to keep pushing to make sure that we have both vote by mail and early voting.

Gretchen Whitmer: Encouraging people to vote by mail

We're encouraging people to vote by mail. Michigan's made great strides in terms of that ability just in the last couple of years. The people of our state said we want that right and so we amended our Constitution. We're really going to encourage everyone who can vote by mail to do that. We can't put off an election because of a pandemic, but we can take the appropriate steps to keep people safe so that they can exercise their right in this country of ours and stay safe in doing it.

Elizabeth Warren: Vote by mail is an easy solution to pandemic restrictions

Warren is championing a vote-by-mail plan for the entire country, calling it an "easy" solution to the restrictions prompted by the coronavirus pandemic. "A voter gets a ballot with a postage-paid return envelope. They vote, they sign it, and they send it back. It's easy to vote by mail," Warren said. "There should be online registration, extended registration deadlines, and expand early voting to make sure that voting is accessible to all people," she said.

Amy Klobuchar: Expand early voting, no excuse absentee vote by mail

Klobuchar announced The Natural Disaster and Emergency Ballot Act of 2020 alongside Sen. Ron Wyden, which would expand early in-person voting and extend "no-excuse absentee vote-by-mail" to all states. The bill would specifically "ensure that voters in all states have 20 days of early in-person voting and no-excuse absentee vote-by-mail and ensure states begin processing votes cast during early voting or by mail 14 days before Election Day to avoid delays in counting votes on Election Day."

Stacey Abrams: Get rid of classist, racist Electoral College

Abrams was on a television talk show when she advocated that "she wants to 'go around the Constitution' to end 'racist' Electoral College . because she thinks we '[don't] have time' to wait for a constitutional amendment." A posting from the show, "The View," noted "@staceyabrams explains why she says the electoral college is a 'classist racist system whose time has passed and we need to get rid of it.'"

Donald Trump: Against mail-in voting, early voting as terrible, dishonest

At the White House Coronavirus Task Force briefing, Trump said mail-in voting is "a terrible thing."

"I think if you vote, you should go. Even the concept of early voting is not the greatest, because a lot of things happen," he said. But he emphasized "there's a lot of dishonesty going on with mail-in voting, mail-in ballots. Thousands of votes are gathered and dumped in a location and all of a sudden you lose elections that you think you win," Trump said. "I'm not going to stand for it."
