On Environment: Bipartisan support for making animal cruelty a federal crime

Members of Congress are cheering President Trump's signing of the Prevent Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act, which specifies that animal cruelty will be a federal crime.

"Callous cruelty towards animals is abhorrent, and it's time for the punishment to reflect the seriousness of the crime," U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., said of the action. "I'm glad to see this bipartisan legislation signed into law so that those who needlessly harm animals are held accountable."

"This new law is vital not only to help prevent the horrific crime of animal torture, but also because such cruelty against animals can often be a precursor to violent crimes against humans," U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., added. "I'm grateful to my colleagues from both parties, and the president, for coming together to support this landmark measure."

On Immigration: Stop allowing Syrian refugees into the US

Hassan said that the government should stop resettling Syrian refugees in the U.S. Her spokesman, William Hinkle, told the New Hampshire Union Leader "The Governor has made clear that we must ensure robust refugee screening to protect American citizens and the Governor believes that the federal government should halt acceptance of refugees from Syria until intelligence and defense officials can assure that the process for vetting all refugees is as strong as possible."

Hassan is challenging Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte for her Senate seat. Ayotte's spokeswoman Liz Johnson told The Daily Beast that the senator thinks the government should stop accepting Syrian refugees for the time being. She said that's because the Feds cannot guarantee with complete certainty that none of the refugees currently being resettled here are affiliated with ISIS.
