Jay Inslee in 2020 WA Governor's race

On Civil Rights: Racial inequity not limited to criminal justice

Inslee, by contrast, says he's open to discussions on ending qualified immunity, but he hopes action to address racial inequity is not limited to criminal justice. That would mean better preparing young students of color for school and providing their families health care, he says.

Culp has also said he doesn't believe there is systemic racism. And when presented the opportunity to explain how, if there is no systemic racism, there still exist racial disparities in education, income and health outcomes, Culp dodged the question by simply pointing out that there are laws that say everyone will be treated equally.

On Energy & Oil: Forest wildfires are "climate fires"

Inslee has called the fires that have decimated small towns in Washington "climate fires," while Culp has questioned climate change. But on the wildfires specifically, Culp blames poor forest management in the state and, by extension, Inslee. But Inslee blames Trump for slashing the budget for thinning forests. He adds it takes time for forest management, but that the state's investment in forest treatment has gone up significantly since he's been in office.

On Health Care: COVID: Lower infections with masks, distancing, not Trump

On coronavirus: "Because Washingtonians are not listening to Donald Trump, and frankly, Chief Culp, they are wearing masks, they are social distancing, and as a result of that we have lowered our infection rate dramatically," Inslee says in a recent debate against Culp. "We have saved lives."

Culp argues that many of these restrictions, most notably a mask mandate, shouldn't be dictated by the governor. Wearing a mask, he says, should be a personal choice. "The problem is when we have one person sitting in the governor's office telling everyone what they are going to wear," Culp says.

On Social Security: Suspends laws allowing garnishment of stimulus checks

Debt collectors will not be able to touch your stimulus check under a proclamation signed Tuesday by Gov. Jay Inslee. The proclamation suspends statutes that allow consumer debts to be collected through bank account and wage garnishments. It also prevents post-judgement interest from accruing on consumer debt judgments during the coronavirus pandemic.

On Drugs: Prepared to defend state marijuana legalization against DOJ

Washington state officials, including Gov. Jay Inslee and Attorney General Bob Ferguson, are vowing to defend the state's pot laws as federal changes are planned, after U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions rescinded Justice Department policies under President Obama that allowed state-sanctioned marijuana markets to sprout up across the country.

"We will use every single power at our disposal to preserve and protect the mission statement Washington State voters gave us,” said Gov. Jay Inslee, at a news conference at the state capitol, noting that voters approved the initiative legalizing marijuana in Washington state.

While Ferguson said he didn't know whether Washington would take any legal steps against Sessions' action, his office has spent years preparing. "Take my word for it, but my legal team has been very focused on this issue from the day marijuana was legalized in Washington state five years ago," Ferguson said, adding later: "Our legal arguments have been crafted; we are prepared."
