2021 CA Governor's race: on Health Care

Doug Ose: COVID: Instead of mandates, give people options

Gov. Newsom announced that state employees and health care workers would be required to get vaccinated or be subject to regular COVID testing.

Few issues united the Republicans on stage like their disdain for public health mandates. "I happen to have great faith in the ability of people to make decisions of their own," said Ose, who spoke with the technical knowledge of a longtime lawmaker and, at times, a table-pounding indignation. "Instead of giving people mandates, we need to give them options."

Gavin Newsom: State employees to get vaccinated or regular testing

Newsom announced that state employees and health care workers would be required to get vaccinated or be subject to regular COVID testing.

Few issues united the four Republicans on stage like their disdain for public health mandates. "I happen to have great faith in the ability of people to make decisions of their own," said Doug Ose, who spoke with the technical knowledge of a longtime lawmaker and a table-pounding indignation. "Instead of giving people mandates, we need to give them options."

John Cox: Public-private partnership to get vaccinations done

Getting our at-risk populations vaccinated requires a private-public partnership between the state and pharmacies. There are over 8,000 pharmacies in California. Let's use them effectively to rapidly vaccinate our population and remove barriers to getting those vaccines out to the people who need them. That requires the state to remove some of the red tape so that we can expand the number of doctors and nurses who can provide these shots.

John Cox: Opposed vaccination mandate for health care workers

Gov. Newsom announced that state employees and health care workers would be required to get vaccinated or be subject to regular COVID testing.

Despite being infected with COVID early on in the pandemic, Cox said he opposed the governor's recent action to coax health care workers to get vaccinated. He also asserted that people who have already contracted the disease don't need the vaccine, contrary to guidance from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Kevin Faulconer: COVID: I do not favor mandates; I favor education

Gov. Newsom announced that state employees and health care workers would be required to get vaccinated.

Faulconer, who has long distinguished himself across California GOP-dom as a relative moderate, stressed that he and his entire family had been vaccinated and he encouraged everyone who hasn't been to get the jab, too. But encouragement is as far as the state should go. "I do not favor mandates, I favor education," he said. "You're not going to mandate your way out of the coronavirus."

Kevin Faulconer: COVID: For vaccinating everyone, but not mandating

Faulconer and his family are vaccinated against the coronavirus--but he wouldn't mandate it for anyone if he were governor of California, he said in an interview with McClatchy's California editorial boards. When it comes to addressing the state's rising COVID-19 cases, Faulconer said he is a "strong proponent of educating, not mandating." Faulconer said he does want to see all Californians get vaccinated.
