Rett Newton in Survey of 2021 Senate campaign websites

On Budget & Economy: Raise the minimum wage, reinvest in infrastructure

The pandemic has brought about a devastating economic crisis that has intensified the gap between the haves and the have nots, with millions out of work, small businesses crumbling and the rich getting even richer. Many Americans and North Carolinians are struggling to afford food, housing, and basic necessities. As our Senator, Rett will work to support small businesses, raise the minimum wage, expand workers' rights, and reinvest in North Carolina's infrastructure to create local jobs.

On Civil Rights: All of us are equal and deserve the same rights and freedoms

In the Air Force, Rett defended all Americans and the belief that all of us are equal and deserving of the same rights and freedoms. From the endless discrimination that people of color face in our criminal justice system, to protections for LGBTQIA+ individuals, to women fighting an uphill battle when it comes to access to educational opportunities and even their basic healthcare needs, Rett will work in the Senate to ensure that every American is treated with dignity.

On Crime: Our policing and criminal justice systems are broken

Our policing and criminal justice systems are broken, rooted in bias and racism, and in desperate need of reform. Racial bias and excessive force in law enforcement is unacceptable and there must be accountability. Rett will prioritize ending the school-to-prison pipeline, investing in preventative measures like mental health care, and eliminating for-profit prisons.

On Energy & Oil: Fight to accelerate our transition to clean renewable energy

As a marine scientist, Rett deeply understands climate change and the effects it has had on our North Carolina coast. During his time as Mayor of Beaufort, Rett has worked to clean up our waterways, rebuild after hurricanes, and invest in our infrastructure to prepare for new climate challenges. Rett will fight to accelerate our transition to clean, renewable energy, making sure that we prioritize low-income and regional communities that have been hardest hit by climate change and pollution.

On Government Reform: Restore and strengthen protections of the Voting Rights Act

Democracy works best when more people vote and are engaged in the democratic process. That's why Rett will work to combat attempts at voter suppression at every level of government and expand in person early voting and vote-by-mail while providing resources to ensure election security. In addition, Rett is committed to protecting voters from racial discrimination and he will work to restore and strengthen the protections of the Voting Rights Act.

On Health Care: Strengthen Affordable Care Act, expand Medicaid

No family should have to go bankrupt to pay for their medical bills. The COVID-19 crisis highlighted the many failures in our health care system and the urgent need for reform. In the Senate, Rett will fight to lower prescription drug costs, protect North Carolinians with pre-existing conditions, and strengthen the Affordable Care Act. Rett will work to expand Medicaid in North Carolina and ensure that every American has equal access to quality, affordable health care.

On Immigration: Address border crisis, ensure a path to citizenship

This nation was shaped by immigrants and we have thrived because of our unparalleled diversity. In the Senate, Rett is committed to protecting immigrant communities and ensuring immigrants have access to critical services, including the COVID-19 vaccine, economic aid, and aid to small businesses. Rett will work alongside the Biden-Harris administration and hold the White House accountable to address the crisis at the border, protect DREAMers, and ensure a path to citizenship.

On Principles & Values: We need leaders to put service over self, country over party

Throughout my career as an Air Force officer, I have responded to multiple crises--both abroad and at home on 9/11. After January 6th, 2021, it's clear that what our country needs right now are leaders who put service over self and country over party. I am running because our country is in crisis and we need leaders in Washington who will protect our democracy, our jobs, our environment, and help those who are struggling to get food, affordable housing, and accessible health care.
