2021 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Jobs

John Bel Edwards: Pass a minimum wage bill, get it on my desk, I'll sign it

I am one of the overwhelming majority of Louisianans who want a meaningful increase to the minimum wage that will help workers support their families and enjoy a better quality of life. This year, instead of including a specific minimum wage bill in my package, I am supporting any and all efforts to raise the minimum wage. So my message to the Legislature is simple: pass a bill. Get it on my desk. I'll sign it.

Janet Mills: Goal: 100% of students have option of paid internships

These internships will provide real world job experience in the trades, healthcare and other fields, connecting Maine kids to our economy and putting them on a path to good-paying jobs here in Maine. Ultimately, our goal is to expand this program statewide to ensure that 100 percent of Maine students have the option for a six month paid internship between their junior year of high school and one year after high school graduation.

J.B. Pritzker: Support for childcare aids women's workforce participation

Illinois has created the nation's largest childcare grant program, with $290 million going directly to 5,000 childcare centers and homes in 95 counties, allowing them to stay afloat over this challenging year. In short: even absent necessary federal action, Illinois gave our all to keeping an entire industry alive--an industry that has the power to make or break women's participation in the workforce--in a way that other states failed to do.

Jared Polis: Passed a law to ensure women are paid the same as men

It's simple: our efforts to support Colorado families fall short if we can't ensure Colorado women a secure place in our economy. That's why it's so important that we passed a law to ensure women are paid the same as men.

Bill Lee: Helped faith communities connect people with job services

Another key part of our efforts to support children and families is within the Governor's Office of Faith-based and Community Initiatives. Among other successes in the last year, the Faith-Based Office played an important role in engaging our local faith communities to help connect people with employment services.

Mike Dunleavy: Bring gaming to Alaska: create hundreds of high-paying jobs

I'll be supporting legislation to bring gaming to Alaska. Alaska can no longer afford to deny itself a revenue stream available to nearly every other state in the nation. Along with enhancing revenue, gaming could create hundreds of high-paying jobs in some of our communities, and we would join a long list of states that have embraced gaming for some time.

Mike Parson: Expand programs to link high school graduates with jobs

I am calling for the expansion of Career Ready 101 to all 57 existing career centers around the state. This program also helps students prepare for the WorkKeys Assessment, a program recognized by hundreds of Missouri employers. Our goal is to offer 12,000 new high school students the opportunity to receive the WorkKeys certification and by the end of my term, I want to see all 114 Missouri counties become certified work ready communities.

Spencer Cox: Funding for job training, not everyone needs a degree

I have proposed significant increases in job training, up-skilling and more money for our trade and technical educational institutions. We must overcome once and for all this terrible idea that every child needs a bachelor's degree to be successful. It's bad for our kids and it's bad for our economy. Helping our children--and adults--find the pathway that is right for them will strengthen families and our economy.

Eric Holcomb: Pass pregnancy accommodations bill for women on the job

Women make up over half of Indiana's workforce and should expect reasonable accommodations at their workplace, which often comes at little or no cost to an employer.

This is why I've come back to the legislature again to ask them to make Indiana the 31st state to pass a pregnancy accommodations bill. Many employers already do this on their own. So, let's get this done for the well-being and security of Indiana's current and future working mothers.

Peter Ricketts: We've been cutting red tape to keep Nebraskans working

Throughout the pandemic, we've been cutting red tape to keep Nebraskans working. From giving licensed professionals more flexibility to allowing restaurants to offer carryout alcohol, we looked for ways to grow our healthcare workforce and help small businesses survive. The jobs being created have helped Nebraska achieve an unemployment rate that is the lowest in the nation. At 3.1%, our unemployment rate for November 2020 is only one tenth of a percent above where it stood one year ago.

Laura Kelly: Rebuilding crumbling infrastructure means jobs

An obvious area for job growth is to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure. I'm proud that Democrats and Republicans came together last year to pass a 10-year infrastructure plan--it's a strategic, practical approach that allows us to prioritize the most urgently needed projects. As we speak, more than 160 state highway and local road projects are under construction or about to be. And another 230 projects have been awarded for future construction.
