2021 Governor's State of the State speeches: on Welfare & Poverty

Gavin Newsom: Nearly $2 billion to create more homeless housing

I'm mindful that we aren't truly addressing the needs of people in poverty unless we account for the biggest pressure most families face: housing and housing stability. Project Roomkey, launched in April, has provided over 35,000 homeless Californians with safe shelter from COVID. And Homekey, launched in July, created more than 6,000 new permanent housing units during the pandemic, buying hotels and motels and converting them at a third of the cost of traditional supportive housing.

Now, bringing the same spirit of innovation behind Project Roomkey and Homekey, we're committing nearly $2 billion this year to create more homeless housing, addressing mental health and substance abuse issues, and ending homelessness one person at a time. No one denies this is a huge challenge, but we know what it means to stare down big challenges.

David Ige: Affordable housing: 10,000 homes built, 3000 more by 2022

We spent more than $71 million in housing assistance to about 13,700 households who would have faced eviction. This program was cited by Forbes Magazine as a model for the nation in getting rent checks to landlords faster than any other state. The pandemic underscored why having a steady supply of affordable housing is so important for our families' well-being. We achieved our initial goal of building 10,000 new homes by 2020. I am setting a new goal of 3,000 more units by the end of 2022.

Tate Reeves: $250 million investment in affordable housing

There is much more to do to ensure more Oregon families have a warm, safe, dry place to call home. My budget continues our $250 million investment in affordable housing, homelessness prevention, and rental assistance. We have also included more than $20 million to help provide a pathway to homeownership for Black, Indigenous, Latino, Latina, Latinx, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, and Tribal communities, as well as adding co-op and land trust models to our system.

Ralph Northam: $25 million new dollars to housing trust fund

It's also time to help people by taking more action on affordable housing. We have made record investments in the Virginia Housing Trust Fund that helps make more affordable housing available. We have proposed $25 million new dollars to the trust fund. This record is more than we have ever invested in helping make sure people have stable housing, and we need to get it done this session.
