On Gun Control: Appreciate thoughts & prayers but need commonsense gun laws

I brought the legislature back to Virginia for a special session. The Republicans spent less than 90 minutes addressing gun violence. Virginians stood up. They spoke. They said, enough is enough. They said that thoughts and prayers, we appreciate those, but we want legislators that will come to Richmond and take votes and pass laws. So, I was pleased to sign seven pieces of commonsense gun legislation that will keep Virginians safe. That's what happens when people listen.

On Principles & Values: Now is not the time for divisiveness, time for leadership

Our president has been unable to deliver on tests. Now he has chosen to focus on protests. This is not the time for protest. This is not the time for divisiveness. This is time for leadership that will stand up and provide empathy, that will understand what's going on in this country of ours with this pandemic. It's the time for truth. It's the time to bring people together. We're fighting a biological war. We have been asked, as governors, to fight that war without the supplies we need.

On Health Care: Expand Medicare, address racial disparities of pandemic

Some of his recent actions included calling for Northam to take stricter measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 throughout Virginia in mid-March and requesting a task force to address the racial disparities of the pandemic in mid-May. Fairfax's campaign will focus on "justice, fairness and opportunity" for all Virginians as well as on Medicaid expansion, police reform and increased education spending.

On Civil Rights: Outed for blackface photo in 1984 medical school yearbook

Northam has been under fire since Feb. 1, when a photo came to light from his 1984 medical school yearbook page that depicted one person in blackface and another in Ku Klux Klan robes. Northam initially took responsibility for the picture; at a news conference a day later, he said he wasn't in the photo but admitted that he put shoe polish on his cheeks to imitate Michael Jackson in a dance contest later that same year.

Many state and national Democrats immediately called on Northam to resign. Days later, Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax was swept up in a scandal of his own, as two women accused him of sexually assault dating from 2000 and 2004 -- charges that Fairfax has vigorously denied. The accusations against Fairfax are "different but a very difficult situation," Attorney General Mark Herring said. The women who say they were sexually assaulted by the lieutenant governor "deserve to be heard, they deserve respect," he said.

On Education: $30 billion to rebuild, reimagine all K-12 schools in state

Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax has announced a $30 billion proposal to rebuild and reimagine all K-12 schools in Virginia. This fund would allocate $30 billion over the next 10 years to reconstruct all K-12 public schools in Virginia that are 40 years or older. The proposal also includes a pay raise for teachers and guarantees a paid summer job or internship for Virginia youth.
