Kay Ivey in 2022 AL Governor's race

On Budget & Economy: Wants to use $400 million of COVID relief to build prisons

Ivey is defending her proposal to use the state's allotment of coronavirus relief funds to build new prisons after receiving criticism from Democrats. Ivey convened a special session of the legislature to discuss how to fix what she has called a decades-long problem. As part of the solution, Ivey has proposed using up to $400 million of federal Covid-19 relief money, up to $785 million in bonds and no more than $154 million from the state General Fund to add new prisons and renovate others.

On Crime: Rehabilitate prisoners; don't just warehouse them

The governor also addressed the recent failure of her prison plan to get the financing it needed to move forward. She said she's now ready to sit down with lawmakers and work out a deal. "Prisons have been in ill repair for decades. They are long past serving their time. So have got to build new prisons and start rehabilitating our prisoners and not just warehousing them," Ivey said.

On Health Care: Opposes vaccine mandates in spite of more than 14,000 deaths

The COVID pandemic hit the state hard and has led to more than 14,000 deaths since the first Alabama case was confirmed in March, 2020. Ivey encouraged vaccinations (though she opposed mandates) and allowed a statewide mask mandate to remain in place through the spring, longer than some of her fellow Republican governors in the South did. But she took a much less prominent role during the summer surge in COVID-19 cases in the state that slammed the health care system.

On Health Care: Accused by opponents of shaming the unvaccinated

Ivey said: "It's the unvaccinated folks that are letting us down," when asked why Alabama leads the nation in unvaccinated persons. "These folks are choosing a horrible lifestyle of self-inflicted pain. We've got to get folks to take the shot. The vaccine is the greatest weapon we have to fight COVID. There's no question about that." Her political opponents accused her of shaming those Alabamians who have chosen not to get the vaccine.

On Technology: Slams Facebook for temporary removal of campaign page

Ivey took a hardline approach to Big Tech, blasting Facebook over the temporary removal of her gubernatorial campaign page and accusing it of working to stop conservatives from speaking out on opposition to federal coronavirus vaccine mandates. By the same afternoon Ivey's campaign page had been reinstated, but she blamed Facebook for the removal, accusing it of being upset that she was protecting Alabamians from federal government overreach by "standing in the way" of Biden.

On Technology: Big Tech & blue state liberals stole election from Trump

In April, during the Republican primary, incumbent Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey released an ad in which she falsely claimed, "The fake news, Big Tech and blue state liberals stole the election from President Trump." Challenged about the ad by local television station WVTM 13, Ivey said she believes Trump was the rightful winner. (He lost.)

The Ivey campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
