Yolanda Flowers in 2022 AL Governor's race

On Abortion: Don't ban abortion but provide counseling for a real choice

Flowers said she hopes to provide counseling for mothers who are considering abortion and to establish more resources for people who carry babies to term but don't want to raise them. She said she does not believe that abortion should be illegal. "We don't need to ban abortion, but abortions need to be done safely," Flowers said. "I'm not trying to sway them, I'm not trying to change their minds, but just giving them information and informed choices so that they can make a real choice."

On Budget & Economy: Lottery can fund infrastructure, accessible broadband

When we focus our attention on supporting our own lottery, we will gain much. Our money will go to funding our education, making it possible for our children to attend in-state universities and community colleges. Our infrastructure will not be neglected anymore because we will have the money to pay for more staff. Our police departments will be able to hire more officers. Broadband will be accessible to all rural counties and small businesses.

On Budget & Economy: Supports state lottery to fund schools, roads, highways

1819 News asked if she supported an Alabama lottery. "Yes, people are gambling anyway," Flowers said. "They are going to gamble. We ought to get some of that money that we are losing to Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and other states." 1819 News asked if Alabama approves gambling where should the money go? "Schools, roads, highways," Flowers said. "The roads have so many potholes here that my car is constantly getting out of alignment. Not in building jailhouses and prisons."

On Crime: Private prisons have corrupted Alabama's justice system

We all know that the criminal justice system is biased in our state. Advocacy, investigations, and "ground-up" change are needed to ensure that our system works for all Alabamians. Citizens should trust their justice system to do what is right regardless of the color of their skin. Private prisons have corrupted Alabama's justice system.

Alabama's prisons systems have always been an issue, but it has come into the spotlight recently. Alabama's correctional facilities need proper funding, but there are other things that can be done to help the system as well. Yolanda does not approve of Governor Ivey's allocation of funds to build more prisons.

On Crime: Hire police, prison guards who are psychologically suited

Flowers said that the state needs to hire law enforcement and prison guards with the right mentality for the job and that not everybody is psychologically suited for those positions.

"You have to have a mind for that and a heart for that," Flowers said. "You have to be able to apprehend somebody without shooting them. "Everybody is not qualified mentally to carry a gun. A lot of people do not know how to handle power."

On Drugs: We must revisit fair sentencing and petty drug offenses

It is time that we invest in recidivism and rehabilitation. As Governor, Yolanda will work with Nonprofit organizations to facilitate the growth and development of our formerly incarcerated Alabamians so that they may become productive and contributing citizens to our budding community. We must revisit fair sentencing and petty drug offenses that incapacitate so many black and brown individuals from ever pulling themselves up by their bootstraps.

On Education: Funding for public schools is crucial, use money lottery

Yolanda is proposing the Lottery to fund our schools. Money from the lottery will fund better built schools with clean, filtered water, cleaner air system, and two nutritious meals. Funding for public schools is crucial and will be greatly increased by funds from the lottery. More funding will also help to increase teacher pay. Increased teacher pay will attract more teachers to the profession. Every student, upon entering school, is to be given a psychological evaluation to site any learning disabilities by the age of five. This will help the teacher, along with the psychologist, to better design a curriculum for the students and develop an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This plan will follow the child to ensure they are successful through their education program.

1819 News asked Flowers if she favored ending the gun permit requirement for concealed carry. "That is dangerous to me, No, I don't," Flowers said. "A gun is power, and some people can't handle power."

"Everyone should be able to go to the store without carrying a gun," Flowers said. "All the violence is because you can buy a gun here. I am not for it."

On Health Care: Healthcare is a right, we must create a comprehensive plan

Healthcare is a right. We must create a comprehensive plan with top medical professionals and economists to determine a cost efficient healthcare plan that works for our most vulnerable population. Alabama also has one of the highest mortality rates in the country. Access to high-quality medical care for low-income families will help to combat the mortality rate.

On Principles & Values: My campaign is based on the word of God

Yolanda Flowers is the first to say she's not like the rest of Alabama's gubernatorial candidates. "I'm different," Flowers said during [the] runoff debate. "I come with the perspective--and I make no slight of it--my campaign is based on the word of God."

"God has given me a vision of what he saw in Alabama," she said during the debate.

On Welfare & Poverty: Support Medicaid expansion for working poor, rural hospitals

Yolanda will propose that Medicaid Expansion apply to not only senior citizens but for those who do work yet can't afford healthcare. It is the government's duty to make healthcare affordable for those who do work with minimal to no premiums and low copayments for primary care physicians and specialists. Alabama has had too many rural hospitals close due to lack of funding, and Republicans have refused to allocate the funds for them. Expanding Medicaid will help each county to have a hospital.
