Bernie Moreno: Defended fellow candidate against antisemitic advertisement

A Republican Senate candidate in Ohio is doubling down on a controversial campaign ad, insisting voters need to be aware of an important fact: that the frontrunner in the primary, Josh Mandel, is Jewish. A moderator at the debate asked for [Republican Senate opponent Mark] Pukita to respond to claims that he is "antisemitic and intentionally divisive and inflammatory."

"In terms of antisemitism, all I did in an ad was pointed out that Josh is going around saying he's got the Bible in one hand and the constitution in the other. But he's Jewish," Pukita said. Pukita's response was quickly condemned by Bernie Moreno.

"Josh, nobody should question your faith. That's not right," Moreno said. "The Jewish religion, the Bible is the Bible. That was hard to hear. I'm sorry about that. That's not right. We're better than that, guys."

Pukita last month was cut out of a forum hosted by the Center for Christian Virtue after the organization deemed his radio ad to be antisemitic.

Eric Greitens: AdWatch: Join MAGA and let's go RINO hunting!

In the ad, Greitens introduces himself as a "Navy SEAL" as he holds a long shotgun, announcing "Today, we're going RINO hunting!" He walks towards a residential home, as other anonymous soldiers in combat fatigues join him.

The RINO "feeds on corruption and is marked by the stripes of cowardice," says Greitens as his combat team breaks down the door of the home, toss a flash-bang grenade inside, and rush in.

"Join the MAGA Crew, get a RINO hunting permit," announces Greitens inside the smoke-filled front room. "There's no bagging limit, no tagging limit, and it doesn't expire until we save our country."

Viewers are then directed to go to Greitens' campaign website, where a $25 donation will get a sticker with the "RINO Hunting Permit" design shown in the video.

It's not his first time selling "hunting permits." During his gubernatorial race in 2016, Greitens sold "ISIS Hunting Permits," but that was supposed to be about terrorists.

Two days after Donald Trump and University of Georgia football legend Herschel Walker appeared at a Perry rally, Walker's Republican opponent donned some ill-fitting football gear for an ad called "On the field." "I'm probably not your first choice to compete on a football field," says Gary Black, who then goes on to highlight his career in public service. "Whatever field the fight is on, I'll keep scoring and winning for Georgia."

Jim Lamon: AdWatch: shootout with Biden, Pelosi, Kelly

Lamon's latest campaign ad takes on "the D.C. Gang," telling them, "The good people of Arizona have had enough of you." Actors play President Biden (labeled in the ad as "Old Joe"), Senator Mark Kelly ("Shifty Kelly") and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi ("Crazyface Pelosi"). The clip shows Lamon shooting at the three, knocking their guns or knives out of their hands as people in the background cheer and the "D.C. Gang" runs away.

The ad is being widely criticized. Sen. Kelly is the husband of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. Giffords was seriously wounded during a mass shooting in Tucson in 2011 when six people were killed. Mark Kelly's Senate campaign declined comment.

ABC15 is hearing from viewers who have seen the ad and want us to stop running it. Federal law requires broadcasters to accept candidates' political ads regardless of the content; television stations are not allowed to reject or censor them.

Mark Pukita: AdWatch: anti-Semitic for saying "My opponent is Jewish"?

Pukita is doubling down on a controversial campaign ad, insisting voters need to be aware of an important fact: that the frontrunner in the primary, Josh Mandel, is Jewish. "Mark Pukita is absolutely, unequivocally, undeniably a complete supporter of religious tolerance and of Israel," a spokesperson said. "He is not a supporter of phonies and panderers."

Blake Masters: The 2020 election wasn't free or fair: I think Trump won

Arizona Republican nominee Blake Masters has been explicit in declaring that "the 2020 election wasn't free or fair." In an ad Masters released in November 2021, early in the Republican primary, he said, wrongly, "I think Trump won in 2020." The rest of the ad was more subjective; Masters argued that Trump would have won in a "fair fight" without supposed anti-Trump media bias, "big tech" suppression of a late-election story about Biden's family, and some states having changed their rules to allow for easier mail-in voting. But Masters' ad-opening claim that Trump actually did win is plain false.

At the end of the Republican primary in early August, Masters' campaign website claimed that "if we had had a free and fair election, President Trump would be sitting in the Oval Office today." After Masters won the primary, CNN's KFile team reported, that language was removed from the site and replaced with this vague declaration: "We need to get serious about election integrity."

Evan McMullin: AdWatch: Some Republicans are racist, but not all

McMullin slammed an attack ad against him and his campaign as a "lie," refuting the claims made in the ad from Club for Growth, a PAC that supports Mike Lee.,p>The ad features McMullin saying "the Republican base is racist," something he claims was taken out of context from an interview following a neo-Nazi march in Virginia in 2017.

Speaking after the march on a CNN panel, McMullin said, "Not all Republicans, of course, are racist. I was raised by Republicans who welcome Americans of all backgrounds and are not at all alike. But there is an element of the Republican base that is racist, and our leaders are afraid to stand up to them, because if they do, if they do so, they'll be criticized, and they'll potentially lose votes, and so they don't do it."

McMullin, who is running against Lee as an independent, called out the ad, saying it edited his own words as a deception to protect his opponent. The McMullin campaign has asked television stations to stop running the ad.
