Bob Stefanowski in 2022 CT Governor's race

On Budget & Economy: Take a holistic approach to modernize infrastructure

I'm going to make sure every penny intended for the Special Transportation Fund is used to improve our transportation and infrastructure. We need to hold true to the promise to taxpayers that we're going to spend transportation funds on infrastructure, not salary costs and fringe benefits that were moved into the STF to hide those costs from the public. We must prioritize projects based on imminent needs and take a holistic approach to modernize infrastructure in a new commuter environment.

On Crime: I will advocate for a holistic approach to reform

I will advocate for a holistic approach to reform, not limited to the scope of criminal justice, but all-inclusive. We cannot wish these serious problems away nor can we ignore crime that we either see for ourselves or read about every day. We need local law enforcement, working with parents, and community leaders to tackle rising crime and evaluate their own police departments, and if there are problems, then we work together to fix them.

On Education: Give parents the choice to find a school that works for them

We need to make our schools centers of excellence, that serve the whole community and empower students and their parents to achieve their highest potential. If local schools are failing local students, we need to give parents the choice to find a school that works for them.

We need to focus on workforce development--employers are asking for it. While for some kids a four-year college degree is the right path, for others it's not. We need to add resources to local trade schools and give kids the skill they need to succeed. That's the only way to make sure that Connecticut and our residents compete for the jobs of the future in a healthy, local economy. Our schools need reform to teach certain basics to create a job training pipeline.

On Environment: Make sure that environmental regulations make sense

Our state parks are a great tourism asset and give visitors a reason to visit Connecticut. Long Island Sound creates billions of dollars in Connecticut and we need to do a better job protecting this valuable resource. We can balance environmental sustainability and economic growth by working together with private partners and making sure that environmental regulations exist that make sense and not just a few extra cents.

On Government Reform: Budget information should be a click away

We must prohibit conflicts of interest and ensure that politicians and their family members can never profit from the positions they hold. I will strengthen the state ethics laws and restore funding and staff to the state contracting review board that was gutted by Governor Lamont.

Promote Tax Transparency: You--the taxpayer--have a right to know how every dollar is being spent and the justification for why. In today's internet age, that information should be a click away.

On Health Care: Expand access to private healthcare for veterans

I will work with federal partners to expand access to private healthcare. This will allow Veterans to seek healthcare outside of the VA hospital system in underserved areas. In rural areas, this program saves hours of time spent traveling for basic medical services. Today's Veterans continue to struggle with PTSD and other mental health issues which have become worse with the pandemic. We owe it to these heroes to create access to healthcare that is as stress-free and hassle-free as possible.

On Homeland Security: Encourage the hiring of Veterans and their spouses

Veterans have developed skills that are needed in both the private sector and the government. Partnering with businesses and state agencies, my administration will make sure that Connecticut's brightest military leaders become our smartest CEOs, job creators, and innovators. My administration will also work with the private sector to encourage the hiring of Veterans and their spouses - who are often discriminated against in the job market due to multiple moves and gaps in employment.

On Tax Reform: Immediately cut the sales tax, eliminate new restaurant tax

Did you know that of the 340 taxes the state collects, the bottom 200 only generate 0.22% of the state budget, some even cost more to collect than they generate in revenue? I'm going to eliminate these taxes on day one, directing my Tax Commissioner to stop collecting them.

I'm calling on the legislature and the Governor to immediately cut the sales tax, the gross receipts tax on gas and eliminate Ned Lamont's new tax on restaurants and prepared foods to address soaring inflation.

On Civil Rights: Transgender policy in school sports needs to be evaluated

Stefanowski declined to embrace or reject Connecticut's policy of allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls' sports. In a text message, Stefanowski questioned the process and analysis behind the policy without proposing a reversal. "To date, I don't believe adequate consideration has been given to the impact this has on women's sports across the board," he said. "This goes beyond fairness--it goes to safety. This needs to be evaluated and we need policies that work for everyone."

On Foreign Policy: Helps set up, support school for Ukrainian refugee children

Stefanowksi traveled to Poland to help set up a school for refugee children and bring supplies to Ukrainians crossing the Polish border. The grandson of Polish immigrants said he stepped away from the campaign trail to visit the school as it was opening. "I know everyone thinks this is political. I get it. I didn't say anything while I was there because I didn't want to sensationalize it," Stefanowski said. "We're trying to raise money for the school."

On Crime: Wrong to take away qualified immunity from police officers

One of the big issues is we took away qualified immunity from police officers and any police officer that does something wrong, and steps across the line, that person needs to be held accountable to the full extent of the law. But my experience is although it happens, and it's tragic, it's the minority of police officers that do that. The rest of our law enforcement need the tools to do the job properly. They need the funding to keep people safe.

On Health Care: Government option is fine, but give people more choices

My family is now part of ConnectiCare. You need a PhD to be able to figure out the options and the prices and the co-pays. We need to provide more flexibility. I think the private sector should be part of that answer. If there is a government option, that's fine, but it should be affordable, it should be good care. And people should have more choices right now, because it's becoming too much of a burden on families of Connecticut, to pay their health care costs and still get by.

On Government Reform: Biden won the election and it's past time to move on

Bob Stefanowski dodged questions about Trump's claims a year ago. On Wednesday, he answered a question about Biden's legitimacy without equivocation. "Joe Biden won the election, and it's past time to move on from 2020 and focus on CT residents trying to figure out how they are going to keep the lights on, gas up their car, get a simple COVID test without waiting in line for hours," Stefanowski said in a text message.
