On Abortion: Codify Roe v. Wade in federal law to protect abortion rights

Nickel said he wants to codify into federal law the rights established by the landmark Roe v. Wade Planned and Parenthood v. Casey rulings, and earlier this year sponsored a bill in the state Senate to do just that. The bill would allow the state to restrict abortions up until fetal viability, which typically happens around 23 or 24 weeks into a pregnancy. It would allow later abortions only in cases when the procedure is necessary to preserve the life or health of the mother.
