Kim Reynolds in 2022 IA Governor's race

On Budget & Economy: Wants state stimulus based on population, not unemployment

Unlike previous funding packages, the new stimulus proposal allocates aid based on a state's unemployed population rather than its actual population, which punishes states that took a measured approach to the pandemic and entered the crisis with healthy state budgets and strong economies. A state's ability to keep businesses open and people employed should not be a penalizing factor when distributing funds. If Congress is going to provide aid to states, it should be on an equitable basis.

On Government Reform: Cut early voting period; close polls an hour earlier

Reynolds has signed legislation cutting the state's early voting period and closing the polls an hour earlier on Election Day. "It's our duty and responsibility to protect the integrity of every election," Reynolds said. "This legislation strengthens uniformity by providing election officials with consistent parameters for Election Day, absentee voting, database maintenance, as well as a clear appeals process for county auditors. All of these steps promote more transparency and accountability."

On Health Care: Kept state "open for business" during pandemic

We have all kept our states "open for business" and delivered food and other goods Americans need during this pandemic. Like other states, we did have to close pieces of our economies temporarily. To meet this challenge, our states moved quickly to cut red tape and allow private employers to pivot to new business models.

As we move into the next phase of managing the pandemic and consider President Trump's guidelines for "Opening Up America Again," we are applying our propensity for planning to reopen the segments of our economies that temporarily closed. Each of us has identified triggers for when regions of our states and sectors of our economies should reopen, based on metrics tailored to our unique circumstances. We are sharing expertise and best practices on how to safely reopen restaurants, churches, gyms and other businesses while continuing to slow the spread of infection.

On Immigration: Migrant children not our problem, different under Trump

Reynolds said she has rejected a federal request to accept migrant children into the state. "This is not our problem," Reynolds said. "This is the president's problem. He's the one that has opened the border and he needs to be responsible for this and he needs to stop it." Reynolds' stand on accepting immigrant children contrasts with her willingness to accept refugees coming into the United States when then-President Donald Trump raised the issue in 2019.

On Jobs: Double required job searches; drop federal benefits early

Iowa will double the number of weekly work search requirements for people on unemployment benefits starting early next year. Reynolds ended Iowa's participation in three federal pandemic unemployment programs in June--nearly three months before they were supposed to expire--in an attempt to prompt people to return to the workforce. So far, those cuts to unemployment benefits haven't appeared to show a sustained boost to Iowa's employment and economy.

On Principles & Values: Let Supreme Court overturn 4 states in 2020 election

Reynolds said in Dec. 2020 that she wanted Iowa to join the Texas lawsuit that tried to overturn Biden's victories in four states, and she lamented that Iowa has a Democratic attorney general [who refused]. She blocked an effort by that attorney general to formally submit his opposition to the lawsuit.

After Biden's inauguration, Reynolds said, "I think he is legitimately elected." But she continued to baselessly suggest there were unanswered questions "about the integrity of the election process."
