Paul Schimpf in 2022 IL Governor's race

On Abortion: Opposed "radical" Reproductive Health Act

The state Senate passed the Reproductive Health Act, making way for the governor to ensure abortion remains available in the state. State Sen. Paul Schimpf was among those to vote "no" on the bill, which he called the most radical pro-abortion rights bill in the nation. "It gets rid of a lot of the meaningful limits . my reading of it, it allows for gender selection of abortions, I think it will make Illinois of the states that has one of the most radical abortion laws," Schimpf said.

On Budget & Economy: We need to get our spending under control, top priority

Schimpf said Illinois' number one challenge is its spending problem. "We had record revenue coming in, but anywhere we could increase spending, we did increase spending. That just doesn't reflect the reality that Illinois has a spending problem, not a revenue problem. We need to get our spending under control, it's something the people of Illinois expect us to do and it's something I'm going to make my number one priority as governor."

On Energy & Oil: Opposed energy bill as "environmental virtue signaling"

Two Illinois nuclear plants would be saved from closure and carbon-emitting coal plants would be closed in the next quarter-century in a clean-energy package the state Senate approved.

"Democrats have once again chosen special interest groups over the people of Illinois. Their environmental virtue signaling will not impact global climate change but will result in the largest rate increase in Illinois history, raising utility prices for working families and making our energy supply less reliable."

On Government Reform: People fleeing from taxes, excessive government regulations

[On state governance during the pandemic]: "My lifelong dream was not to be in politics or be Illinois governor," Schimpf said. "But I decided over the past year, while I was watching our state deteriorate, that I wanted to do something about what is happening. Illinoisans, in many cases, are no longer proud of the state where we grew up. We all watched as our friends and neighbors are fleeing the state because of corruption, high taxes and excessive government regulations."

On Gun Control: Sponsored bill expanding apprentice hunting program

Illinois lawmakers have approved a measure to make it easier for aspiring hunters to learn the ropes of the sport while offering more opportunities to harvest deer. "Youth and apprentice hunting programs have proven to increase participation and help grow the next generation of hunters," said state Sen.Paul Schimpf, a sponsor of the measure. "A strong field of hunters is essential for maintaining the state deer herd at appropriate levels and is a major economic engine for Illinois."

On Principles & Values: A duty to serve your country, your state, and your community

[On government service]: "I believe you have a duty to serve your country, your state and your community," Schimpf said. "I'm going to step up and try to make changes and do something. I'm not going to stand by idly while I watch our state government abandon its responsibility and squander opportunities to solve our long-term problems."
