Luke Mixon in 2022 LA Senate race

On Budget & Economy: Infrastructure spending is not "stupid," it's what's needed

Senator Kennedy was willing to spend billions to build up Iraq and Afghanistan, but he calls bipartisan funding for infrastructure in Louisiana "wasteful spending" and "stupid stuff." The bipartisan infrastructure bill repaves our roads, repairs our bridges, upgrades our water infrastructure, expands broadband access, shores up our coastline, and creates thousands of good paying jobs. That's not stupid stuff. That's what Louisiana families desperately need!

I believe in a fair wage for an honest day's work. We must create an economy that serves everyone, not just those at the top. That means we need to create more jobs that pay a living wage, but Senator Kennedy has voted against numerous pieces of legislation, like the bipartisan infrastructure bill, that would have secured thousands of good-paying jobs for Louisianans.

On Families & Children: Parents should have access to affordable child care

Part of ensuring that our economy works for everyone is making sure that parents have access to affordable child care options so that they can drop their kids off somewhere safe and reliable when they go to work, without breaking the bank. John Kennedy knows that parents need affordable child care, yet he opposes legislation that would make it a reality, like the Build Back Better Act. I will fight to get Louisiana families the help they need.

On Health Care: Healthcare is a right, not a privilege

Healthcare is a right, not a privilege:

Medicaid expansion in Louisiana gave over 500,000 hard-working Louisianans healthcare that they desperately needed. However, Senator Kennedy has repeatedly tried to take their coverage away. We need leaders who will work to lower the costs of healthcare and prescription drugs, not career politicians who want to rob working families of their coverage.

On Homeland Security: My desire to serve was inspired by my grandfather

It was also during this time that my desire to serve in the military was inspired by my grandfather, Charles Mixon, who served as a B-24 flight engineer during WWII. I graduated from the Naval Academy in 2001, three months prior to 9/11, which would determine the course of my military career. During my time in the military, I was blessed to work with some of the bravest and most talented Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines. But I've also seen the consequences of irresponsible leadership.

On Jobs: Critical to guarantee right to join or form a union

We must create jobs, raise wages, and guarantee the right to join or form a union:

It is critical that we guarantee the right to join or form a union in Louisiana. Senator Kennedy has consistently voted to protect big corporations and not the hard-working people of Louisiana. In 2019, the AFL-CIO gave Kennedy a career grade of 8/100 for protecting Louisiana's middle class. It is our state leadership's duty to unapologetically fight for the hard-working people of Louisiana.

On Principles & Values: In military had a little mantra: God, Family, Country

Mixon said it's his career in the military that has prepared him to be a member of the Senate. "We had this little mantra," said Mixon. "It said God, Family, Country. There is nothing in there about Republicans and Democrats. If we just look out for our constituent's best interests, that is always the answer to the problem."

On Principles & Values: I am country first, I am a very moderate person

Mixon said he expects Senator Kennedy to attack him as a radical liberal. When asked if he was a "Pelosi-Schumer radical liberal," Mixon responded by laughing. "Again, I am country first," said Mixon. "I am a very moderate person who is open to what is the best answer and what is the right thing for Louisiana."

On Principles & Values: Instilled with ideals of duty, honor, and loyalty

At the Naval Academy, our Mission was to develop midshipmen morally, mentally, and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor, and loyalty. My experiences from growing up in central Louisiana, to the Naval Academy, to flying missions in the Middle East have instilled in me those ideals of duty, honor, and loyalty. And now, more than ever, that's exactly what we need. Louisiana needs a responsible leader. As Senator, that is exactly what I plan to be.

On Abortion: I would vote to codify Roe and protect women's health care

I was deeply disappointed with the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe. Forcing survivors of rape or incest to give birth, risking women's lives, and threatening to jail doctors are not the values I foght to defend. We must defeat these radical laws. I would proudly vote to codify Roe and protect women's health care.

On Budget & Economy: I support the bipartisan infrastructure deal

Senator Kennedy voted against the bipartisan infrastructure bill and its good-paying jobs, calling it "wasteful spending" and "stupid stuff." The bipartisan infrastructure isn't stupid stuff. It repaves our roads, repairs our bridges, ensures that every family has access to clean drinking water, expands broadband access for rural and inner-city communities, and restores our coastline while creating thousands of good-paying union jobs in Louisiana. I support the bipartisan infrastructure deal.

On Civil Rights: I support marriage equality, would vote to make it law

Every American has the right to Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Nothing is more central to the pursuit of happiness than partnering with the person you love and marrying your partner if you so choose. Members of the LGBTQ community should be free to marry their partner, if they choose, without government interference--because they are Americans. I completely support marriage equality and would proudly vote to make it law.

On Crime: We need to invest in police departments, improve training

Police departments across Louisiana are critically understaffed, underpaid, and under-funded. We need to invest in our police departments, providing them with the funds required to hire more qualified officers, improve training, boost response times, and keep our neighborhoods safe. Every family deserves a safe community where they can raise their children. If we take the politics out of public safety, we can have effective and humane policing that keeps us safe.

On Drugs: Supports Biden's move to review how marijuana is classified

I also applaud President Biden's decision to initiate a review of how marijuana is scheduled, to ensure that we are being guided by the facts and science-- not outdated propaganda.

On Education: Make quality, affordable Pre-K available to every child

Education is the key to future success. Unfortunately, we are failing our children and sabotaging our future. Less than half of Louisiana public school students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade are reading at the appropriate grade level. Less than half! That's unacceptable. We have to close the literacy gap, which is why I support making quality, affordable Pre-K available to every Louisiana child.

On Energy & Oil: Louisiana will continue to be an oil and gas state

Fossil fuels are not going anywhere, and Louisiana will continue to be an oil and gas state. But Louisiana's location, landscape, and natural resources invite us to enter emerging energy markets that will bring good-paying jobs to our state. We will continue producing oil and gas while taking advantage of wind, solar, and other renewables, which provide residents with cost-efficient and reliable sources of energy and good-paying jobs tailored to our workforce.

On Families & Children: Make daycare more affordable so both parents can work

The average family with two kids in Louisiana spends one-fifth of their household income on daycare. That is a prohibitive cost that discourages parents–particularly mothers–from entering the workforce, hurting our families and our economy. I will work to make daycare more affordable to ensure more households can enjoy the financial security that comes from bringing home two paychecks.

On Foreign Policy: Navy experience helps in understanding policy consequences

With conflicts in Ukraine, and China threatening an invasion of Taiwan, Mixon adds his experience in the Navy would make him an essential voice in Washington. "I have been on the other end of our foreign policy for a long time," Mixon told KNOE. "I think we need more people like me who understand the consequences of our foreign policy and can vote responsibly when sending America's sons and daughters to war."

On Free Trade: Time to rely on American workers more than foreign nations

Inflation is hurting Louisiana families. Every time we buy milk, food, and put a little gas in our car, we feel it. It's time to stop talking about inflation and do something to bring costs down. That means investing in American supply chains and creating jobs here in Louisiana. It's time we relied on American workers more than foreign nations.

On Government Reform: Pass John Lewis Voting Rights Act; combat voter suppression

Voting is our birthright as Americans. Yet, we are seeing states enact laws that make it harder for Americans to exercise this fundamental right. Senator Kennedy consistently opposes measures to protect voting rights. We must pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act to combat voter suppression and ensure the right to vote remains intact, and I support a carve out in the filibuster to protect this most sacred right for all Americans.

On Gun Control: Calls for background checks on all gun sales

Luke Mixon, a Democrat campaigning to defeat U.S. Sen. John Kennedy this fall, is calling on Kennedy to support requiring background checks on all gun sales. "Background checks will not stop every shooting death, but they will save lives," Mixon said. "Moreover, 90% of Americans support this measure. Background checks are a good start, and the time to act is now."

On Health Care: Life-saving drugs should be affordable

In the wealthiest nation on earth, living-saving drugs should be affordable. Instead, we see neighboring countries enjoying the benefits of affordable medicines while Americans go broke at the pharmacy. I will fight to ensure that no one has to choose between filling a prescription and paying the light bill.

On Jobs: Increase the minimum wage so people are fairly compensated

I believe in the dignity of work and a fair wage for an honest day's work. However, $7.25 is a poverty wage. There is no state in the country where you can support a family on $7.25 per hour. The federal minimum wage has not been raised since 2009. Inflation has robbed workers of 17% of their wage's value over the last 13 years. I will work to increase the minimum wage to ensure that working people are fairly compensated for their work and that they can support a family.
