2022 MD Governor's race: on Civil Rights

Ashwani Jain: LGBTQ people welcome in Maryland: you make us stronger

To those who feel marginalized for their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression, I want to assure you that you are welcome in Maryland--and you make us stronger! And for those of us not part of the LGBTQ community itself, it is important that we remain partners and allies--because we are all stronger together. And no, you don't need to fully understand the nuances of gender identity to know that each individual person knows who they are better than you or I ever will.

When you vote for a Governor, you're also voting for the person who will choose the Cabinet and Administration. I will work to create the most diverse administration in our state's history by hiring qualified individuals who reflect the great diversity of our state. We need to bring more veterans, women, people of color, LGBTQ and persons with disabilities to the table. The more leaders we have with similar lived experiences to residents, the more sincere they'll be when enforcing policies.

Dan Cox: Critical Race Theory is Marxist propaganda

Remove CRT (Critical Race Theory) from public schools: "CRT is Marxist propaganda and it has no place in our civil and free society. I will also fight to restore local control of education and curriculum and will support parental rights in education."

Dan Cox: Filed suit against high school transgender accommodation

A federal lawsuit that was filed in response to a Maryland school system's policy regarding transgender students has been dismissed. Cox said he was working on behalf of a 15-year-old girl at Frederick County High School. "The purpose of her suit was to protect her own privacy and the rights of girls to not have to undress in front of the opposite sex in their own bathrooms," he said. "Her personal dignity is at the forefront of our interests."

John B. King: Great-grandfather enslaved; must grapple with racial equity

He said he would focus on inequity, emphasizing that he would be the first Black governor of Maryland, where his great-grandfather was enslaved. "If you look at the issues that we are facing today .?.?. they are all very much tied to the state's history around the institution of slavery, around segregation and discrimination," King said. "I think it's important for us as a state to sort of grapple with those issues of racial equity and to build a future that provides opportunity for all."

John B. King: We undermine societal improvement by burying historic racism

So many of our challenges today are tied to that history around slavery and segregation and red lining. We can`t wish it away. We can`t bury it. And if we do, we risk undermining our ability to improve our society. And that sadly, I think, is the hope here that we sort of freeze our society in the systemic racism that has plagued us since the beginning.

Rushern Baker: Our differences are to be celebrated, accepted, protected

Every facet of government and life should reflect diversity and inclusion. Our administration would be a champion for all. This means that our differences in race, ability, religion, ethnicity, and sexual preference are celebrated, accepted, and protected. However, solely governing with these ideals is not enough. We need to be intentional about restoring people's trust in a government that will see them, amplify their voices, and remove obstacles that were systemically put in place to hold some down and lift others up. Every Marylander deserves to live their best life.

Recovery is an opportunity to create a state where everyone can benefit from a thriving and competitive economy. We want to deliberately invest in the people and infrastructure of underserved communities; eliminate discriminatory practices in lending; ensure equal access to grants; and make Maryland the Black Business Startup Capital of the Nation.

Wes Moore: Ensure Maryland schools adopt LGBTQ+ affirming policies

Support students who identify as LGBTQ+ by fully implementing the newly passed Inclusive Schools Act, ensuring Maryland schools adopt LGBTQ+ affirming policies, create partnerships with organizations working with LGBTQ+ youth to provide additional resources needed to support our students, and broaden access to trauma-informed mental health care in schools.

Support the passage of the Trans Health Equity Act to ensure transgender Marylanders can receive the gender-affirming health care they need.
