2022 MD Governor's race: on Immigration

Ashwani Jain: Police shouldn't ask individuals about immigration status

Unless individuals have violated State criminal laws or are under the authority of criminal warrants issued by the state or federal judges, I do not believe we should be working with ICE to detain/house non-violent individuals who have been placed in ICE custody. We must ensure that our law enforcement agencies do not ask individuals about immigration status or take action simply based on a person's immigration status.

Ashwani Jain: Advocate for Sanctuary counties & refugee right to counsel

In the past, I've helped organize the state to get the Maryland Dream Act passed in 2012, and was the first candidate in my 2018 Montgomery County Council race to advocate for Sanctuary County policies.I have also been vocal in my support for "Right to Counsel" laws that help refugees--who have come to Maryland--gain access to critical legal assistance with their valid claims to remain in the United States.

Dan Cox: Remove criminal illegal aliens from our communities

Defend our communities from increased violence by providing the necessary budget for local and state law enforcement to effectively do their jobs. I will support and empower our local Sheriffs, State Police and Federal partners to remove criminal illegal aliens from our communities.

Peter Franchot: Praised tax credit that includes undocumented people

Tens of thousands of low-wage workers--including many immigrants--now qualify for a significant tax break. The expansion applies to workers who pay taxes through an Individual Tax Identification Number--a group that includes immigrants, including some with lawful status and some without. Comptroller Peter Franchot praised lawmakers for their "fair treatment of our neighbors." As the state's chief tax collector, Franchot's office is responsible for administering the state version of the EITC.
