Michael Steele in 2022 MD Governor's race
On Government Reform:
Biden showed moral courage in criticizing voter suppression
Q: What did you think of this president speak about what he calls Jim Crow racist voter discrimination?STEELE: He showed his interest in the very fundamental thing that we appreciate constitutionally, and that is the right to vote.
And now the test is going to be on us as citizens to meet the challenge of the president to stick our moral courage to that sticking point, if you will, to make sure that these types of offenses to our democracy are rebuffed.

On Government Reform:
We know this is all about a fear of black voters
I have been an advocate of voting reform since I was a county chairman here in Prince George`s County back in the 1990s. My view then, being in a county where I was outnumbered -- there are 800,000 residents, 58,000 of whom at that time were registered
Republican voters, OK? What this is all about, voter suppression. We know this is all about a fear of black voters. This is targeted to states like Georgia, like Michigan, where black voters turned out in numbers.

On Principles & Values:
If you're not ready to listen, you will never learn
He offered advice to those interested in a career in politics, especially students. "If you don't know who you are, don't get in this game," Steele said. "If you're not ready to shut up and listen to what people around you are saying, you will never
learn and, therefore, you will never grow, and, therefore, you will never be that good leader you want to be." He spoke further on the traits of a good leader. "Always be prepared to lead, but never be afraid to follow," Steele said.
"When I criticized Donald Trump, I didn't really care what anybody else inside the party thought about that because I was sharing my conviction," Steele said. Steele disagreed with the practice of blindly following
the leader of the party you support. "This is not about one man, nor should it be," Steele said. "It's not about the party. It's about the country I live in."

On Principles & Values:
Religion set how I come to view and experience the world
Steele grew up as a devout Catholic and studied for the priesthood. Steele said his religious upbringing was a big contributor to his future career. "It was grounding, it was very, very important,"
Steele said. "It set for me how I would ultimately come to view the world and how I would experience the world, how I find the water's edge where things are not any longer political but they're, in fact, about people."

On Principles & Values:
Trump turned GOP from honorable party to personality cult
In a life spent advancing Republican principles, I had the privilege to do so when it was not particularly easy. But I saw an opportunity to grow those Republican principles in a new way, to go a bit against the grain, to push back on
the "establishment" mindset. More and more of the men and women who once stood on the front lines of moving the party into the future were forced to retreat and watch Trump turn the Republican Party from an honorable political movement into a cult of
personality. We believe our system of government is one of the greatest achievements in history, especially building a society that respects the rights to life and liberty. We believe America is a force for good in the world, even as we acknowledge
that our history is hardly perfect. We believe that the rights of the individual should be treated with the utmost respect. We believe that our nation matters to a living God. We believe that freedom is worth fighting for. Our president does not.
