2022 MN Governor's race: on Budget & Economy

Michelle Benson: Crack down on waste, fraud, and abuse

State government needs to be responsive and responsible to Minnesotans. We can achieve these goals by paying state employees based on performance, streamlining state agencies, and cracking down on waste, fraud, and abuse.

Family Budgets First: Supporting hard-working Minnesota families should always be a top priority. If you can balance your family budget, then the state should balance its budget. Government should focus on its core functions like improving roads and building critical infrastructure, making it easier to own a home, and creating a business culture that encourages private-sector jobs.

Mike Murphy: Incentivize developers to build quality senior housing

Our society has an obligation to provide seniors in need with safe and affordable communities in which they can happily live. Mike has heard far too often that current seniors living in Minnesota are "unaffordable" even though they live in what is defined as "affordable housing communities." We need to establish lower housing costs for seniors and incentivize developers to build quality senior housing communities in Minnesota.

Tim Walz: Invest budget surplus in things that make Minnesota strong

Asked about the state's budget surplus, Walz said the state needs to "invest in those things that make Minnesota strong," such as education, child care, workforce development infrastructure.

[GOP opponent] Jensen countered that the surplus is a result of overtaxing citizens. He proposes eliminating the tax on Social Security, cutting fraud and abuse and weighing a cut to the state income tax.

Walz countered that cutting the state's income tax could lead to cuts to funding for education, programs that assist needy families, public safety. "Minnesota's economy is stronger in the upper Midwest and we can continue to be there," Walz said.

Jensen said this is an "opportune moment" in the state's history to consider an income tax cut.
