Vicky Hartzler in 2022 MO Senate race

On Civil Rights: Opposed transgender soldiers service & Equality Act

Hartzler's House tenure has been marked by her staunchly conservative stances on social issues. She championed an effort to restrict transgender soldiers from serving in the military and has spoken against the Equality Act, which would establish national anti-discrimination protections for sexual orientation and gender identity.

On Civil Rights: Supported clerk refusing to issue same sex marriage licenses

In 2004 she served as spokeswoman for the Coalition to Protect Marriage in Missouri, which successfully campaigned for a state constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. Following the Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage, Hartzler was the only member of the Missouri delegation to issue a statement in support of Kim Davis, clerk of Rowan County, Ky., who refused to comply with court orders directing her to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

On Homeland Security: Chinese military threat is real, Biden cuts defense budget

The military threat from China is real, and if our nation does not keep up with this threat, there will be serious repercussions. Despite this threat, President Biden has failed to demonstrate his commitment to supporting a strong national defense that will provide a credible deterrent against China. Our commander in chief is asking Congress to cut defense spending by $4 billion in real dollars at a time when China is rapidly increasing its capabilities and threatening stability in the Pacific.

On Homeland Security: Defense budget should invest in future capabilities

A responsible defense budget would invest in future capabilities, while ensuring current capabilities are still available before replacements are operational. Unfortunately, this proposed budget will erase years of progress made in rebuilding and modernizing our military. Congress must make the responsible national security decision and adequately fund our military to ensure our service members have the resources needed to address and deter China today and meet evolving threats in the future.

On Principles & Values: Voted against certifying Biden's Electoral College victory

During a campaign kickoff at Frontier Justice, a gun store in Lee's Summit, Hartzler unloaded attacks on President Biden, Democrats and "cancel culture." She sought to link herself to former President Trump, telling supporters that together they would "Make America Great Again." In Congress, Hartzler was one of five House Republicans from Missouri who voted against certifying Biden's Electoral College victory. She has spoken against LGBTQ rights and called for tough treatment of China.

On Principles & Values: Voted for Trump efforts over 95% of the time

Hartzler bragged that she, unlike the three men who have announced they will run, has actually worked with former President Donald Trump on the programs he embraced during his four years in office. "I am one of only two members of Congress from Missouri to have voted for and supported the efforts of President Trump over 95 percent of the time," Hartzler said.

On Principles & Values: Benefitted from farm subsidies she voted for

Hartzler and her husband Lowell Hartzler own farms and a farm implement business based in Cass County. During her first campaign for congress and since environmental organizations and groups opposed to concentrated farming have highlighted the subsidy payments the farms have received from programs she voted for in the U.S. House. Those subsidy payments shot up in 2018, 2019, and 2020, for a total of $232,570, according to federal data posted online by the Environmental Working Group.

On Principles & Values: Voted against removing Confederate statues from Capitol

A plan to remove statues of Confederates and white supremacists from the Capitol attracted votes from a bipartisan supermajority of U.S. House members this week. But southwest Missouri's representatives weren't among the 72 Republicans joining Democrats. Both Rep. Billy Long and Rep. Vicky Hartzler voted against the idea as it passed 305-113.
