Jay Block in 2022 NM Governor's race

On Energy & Oil: No drilling near urban areas; need to strike a balance

Q: What is your view of gas and oil drilling near urban areas of Sandoval County?

Block: I do not agree with drilling near urban areas. Striking a balance between residents and opportunities is delicate and difficult. Time and studies need to be taken into account to ensure the safety and integrity of our urban community is first and foremost. The energy sector is a huge part of our state's economy and our county can and has benefited from it as well.

On Principles & Values: Leaders must speak out against wrongdoing, show up to vote

Q: What qualities make you a better candidate than your opponent?

Block: Leadership. I have defended this country as a military officer for over two decades. I am the only candidate to call for a current commissioner to resign who is under felony indictments for domestic violence. I supported the budget increase for our fire department. I supported the $50 billion industrial revenue bond for economic development. Leaders must speak out against wrongdoing and show up to vote.

On Technology: Funding infrastructure can spur much-needed growth

Q: What could the county do better to increase economic development opportunities?

Block: Fund infrastructure projects and pass IRBs. [industrial revenue bond] The county just passed a $50 billion IRB that can be used to expand current businesses and attract outside businesses to come here. We have an opportunity to expand the west side of Rio Rancho with a north-south freeway. Investing and properly planning this project now will save dollars later and spur much-needed growth in our county.
